No reason at all to assume that. Even without Bowles, we have a lot of depth at guard/wing. Rian has been described as a SG not a PG, so even though losing Bowles (if he is indeed out for the year) would mean moving a SG into the backup PG position, there is no need for it to be Rian. Both Ron and Tekele would be able to fill that role. If one or both of those guys plays backup point, it does open up time at the wing, but we have big time depth at the wing. Aside from Ron and Tekele, we have Evan, Nick, Derail, and possibly Cle. That is 7 guys to cover the 1 through the 3, which is plenty of depth.

If Rian was a point guard, they might have a lot of incentive to not redshirt him, but since he would be yet another wing (who would have to play out of position to play point), I don't see that DJ's health changes the decision on Rian much at all.

While I agree with most of the above, I don't think Ri'an would be any more out of position at PG than Tekele as both played PG in high school, but are collegiate wings. I do think that Tekele could handle it better due to his experience.

From a depth perspective I don't see Bowles and Holland red-shirting as an issue at all.

so, rian won't redshirt after all. 'don't know why that bothers you.

I don't think we disagree (but my original point may have been unclear). Rian could certainly be moved over to play some point, but it doesn't make sense to take off a redshirt for him to do that when you could do the same thing with a guy like Tekele who, as you note, has more experience in the system.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. Do I want Rian to redshirt so that he can get his body ready for D1 basketball? Yes. Do I think it makes sense for him to burn a year of eligibility when (even if Bowles is unavailable) he would not get much playing time? No. Has he repeatedly been described as a shooting guard by the coaching staff? Yes. Will he need to be bigger than 145 lbs to be successful there (or anywhere on the court)? Yes (hence the desire to redshirt him).

Yes, as I understand it, in 3Gs offense the SG and SF are pretty much interchangeable, so I'm putting everyone who plays those two positions under the heading of wing. Rian isn't as versatile as some of those other guys, but my point is that we have plenty of guys to cover the SG and SF positions even if some of them cover some minutes at PG.

Ri'an is a combo guard. He may be more of a scorer/shooter than most point guards, and therefore fit best at the wing, but at his size, he better have strong handles. With his quickness, he has the tools to help at point guard. Besides, at his size, he will more likely be best guarding a smaller point guard type.

                    • We don't if DJ is going to miss any games, let alone the whole season. It seems pretty likely given the seriousness of the situation but there is huge unknown as to the cause and two months to figure stuff out.

If DJ misses some or all of the season, I agree the likelihood of Rian taking a red shirt goes down considerably, though it would remain a possibility. Without DJ we are just one injury away from where you might want Rian in the rotation.

I hope he can red shirt as bulking up would help make the adjustment but I think it is significantly less likely.
