White had nine points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes in his debut with the Mavs. But he walked gingerly off the floor midway to the second half and didn’t return. The junior was in the locker room for the final minutes and was standing on crutches in the arena after.

you play to your audience quite well. without intimate knowledge of everything that is entirely speculation. but how their jump to D-1 would affect UNL most likely played a role just not as much as you make it out to be.

Really? Not what the regent from Omaha said. Not what the UNO boosters said. Simultaneous to the move to D-1, there were a couple of state senators not just objecting to the move,but calling for the elimination of all athletics at UNO. Any and every time UNO does something that could improve the school, UNL balks. The innovation campus that Wichita State is building is very similar to the innovation campus at UNO. Oh yeah, Lincoln scoffed when UNO began the project, but since it was very successful, UNL wants to take it away from UNO. They already have successfully gotten UNL involved as a joint effort, and they currently want to steal UNO's IT college. The politics is sickening.

I didn't grow up in Omaha, but I've lived here for 20 years. The politics is obvious if you take a step back.

Seems like I have heard similar things about the politics of higher education in a neighboring state. I'll try to see if I can recall what and where that might have been.

If anyone should be able to empathize with UNO supporters it should be Wichita State supporters.

This article gives a Lincoln slant, as the World Herald always does, but just the way Lincoln is dying to steal the UNO innovation campus is disturbing.

Have to be careful drawing analogies between UNO and WSU in the above regard. UNO is part of the "University of Nebraska" system, and as such is subservient to UNL. On the other hand WSU is an equal footing member of the Kansas Board of Regents - wherein "Kansas" is simply referring to the state. No KBoR school in Kansas is KU's slave, and there is literally no "flagship" institution. As much as the entitlement class and wine & cheese crowd up in Lawrence would like to believe both to be true in an inferred sense, no amount of posturing on their part makes it factual.

KU did however talk the KBoR out of the University of Wichita medical school, after WU had already purchased ground and were well past the due diligence stage. I believe it was one of the things we had to let go of when making the transition from WU - a municipal university (al la Washburn) - to WSU - a full-on board of regents institution. KU Med Wichita is literally built upon the bones of the formerly in-development WU medical school.

Technically they act as one system with a lot of autonomy and no campus is subservient to another. The problems only occur when either Kearney or Omaha do something good. Then the claws come out. As for not being too concerned, you pointed out your lack of a med school. Also keep in mind, the Kansas Board of Regents slogan is "32 Schools, one system." If Wichita State does something too good, with help from your state legislature, the regents from Johnson County could just as easily take your stuff away.

This Innovation Campus has made waves, and will undoubtedly make even larger waves in the future, but nothing from 4 Year Parental-Paid Vacation School East (KU), or West (KSU). KU tried to wiggle their way into our new biomedical composites research, and IIRC got the well-lubed end of a broom handle from WSU.

WSU does not equate to UNO; KU does not equate to UNL. Not sure how you don't get the differentiation between a university system, and a board of regents. They're not the same animal.

I understand the difference between the two, but you only have one board of regents that has control over all of the separate university systems. Might as well all be the same. This is exactly why UNI had the fight with athletics funding, as soon as Iowa became self sufficient because of the Big Ten Network and Iowa State got their Big 12 payout, the Board of Regents suddenly thought UNI should be held to the same standard. Never mind that neither Iowa nor Iowa State were ever self sufficient until the mega TV deals. That is how separate university systems work with one BoR. Might as well be the same thing. UNI would have been better served never to beat Iowa or Iowa State in anything.
