Good point. I forgot he wasn't recruited much.

I wonder what Creighton would have looked like without Doug on the court for the last three years, though.

Daddy McD goes to Creighton, and they ask for Doug to get released from his LOI from UNI. They granted it.
Daddy Mc was head coach at Iowa st. From 2006-2010. Doug's main recruiting schools were schools like Albany St., UNI, N. Dakota St. He was not highly recruited.

          ???
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Greg McD also knew full well he was on the way out during what would have been his son's recruitment period -- there is no way he would have recruited his son to a school he knew full well he was a short timer at. I'd bet $10 that Jacobson "parked" Doug McD as a favor to Greg, until Greg got resituated, with a gentleman's agreement that if Greg didn't find a good fit before the season began, then UNI would get Doug for at least a year. Ok, maybe $5.

Otter: It was Greggie and Douggie... and some of the other Hitler youth.

I can't argue against the fact that Doug is certainly a heck of a player...but would any coach who was not his dad run so much stuff for him to score and also overlook his defensive deficiencies? GM would have loved him as a scorer but would have made him sit for being so bad on defense.

                  This^

Doug was an average MVC recruit at best when he signed at UNI. Greg knew that he couldn't be the ONLY BCS coach to offer his son a scholarship (at Iowa St) and that he would get too much flak if he played his walk-on son over a scholarship player. Once Greg went to Creighton things changed.

To gain perspective on Doug's promise as an incoming freshman, take a look at Evansville's class. Marty Simmons has a kid that is pretty darn good and didn't get many looks or accoladed. He'll likely be a double digit scorer at some point in his career, but as an incoming freshman he doesn't look too special…just like Doug.

Can you technically be "bad on defense", if you have never actually tried it?

No kidding. You start Nick Wiggins and play him over 30 minutes and see how many points and bounds he can average. I bet its not that different.

When I've watch McD, I think his defense is fine. I think Doug's defensive deficiencies are a bit over blown.

If by 'fine' you mean doesn't result in Personal Fouls assessed to himself, then I agree. If by 'fine' you mean contributing meaningfully to preventing the opposing team to score, then I disagree. The man had 8 steals and 2 blocks in 1138 minutes. The ball finds its way into your lap more than 8 times in 1138 minutes. And at 6'8", in a good defensive posture, the opposition accidentally throws the ball into your arm more than 2 times in 1138 minutes. Describing his defense as anything other than deficient when compared to other players at his position is unfair.

For me it's that the gap from O to D is so big it's funny and that's why I make fun of his D.

I suppose he's not BAD. It's just that I wouldn't call it any better than a middle of the road, regular D-1 forward. CU had that whole 222 thing. Well 222 out of 350ish is probably right about where he sits comparatively. There is another huge amount of D-1 forwards who are similar or worse so its not like he stands out has horrid in that company. The problem is when you are about freaking #1 in offense, you look a little silly to be that bad on D, even if there are still guys you are better than.

I think it's safe to say at this point that he wants the D. However, his D pales in comparison to Cottons D.
