There was one paragraph I didn't like. The paragraph with White advising Marshall not to worry about other jobs and just keep winning.
Probably read out of context, but I have never been under the impression that Marshall was worried about other jobs.

Found that interesting myself. Wondering what Doc thinks of that.

I'm almost certain that if UCLA had been more patient HCGM would have been gone.

I have to respectuflly disagree. That's a school that just fired a coach that led their team to the conference Championship and took them to 3 Final Fours in 10 years. I just don't see HCGM wanting to "mess with happiness" in tinsel town. He's stated it has to be the perfect situation. I just don't see UCLA being a perfect situation, for ANY coach.

I think Alford will regret his decision in a couple of years.

It was a scary situation, one of the jobs HCGM could easily take. But very far from certain (I wouldn't even call it probable) given a lot of factors, especially how much returns from a final four team and the precariousness any coach faces at UCLA.

If HCGM really wanted it, I think he could have signaled to UCLA to be patient--who knows if they would have complied but his response in terms of contact is one indication he was not necessarily strongly tempted. It's all reading tea leaves, but I think there was at least as good of a chance of Marshall staying as leaving.

I think Marshall would have appreciated the challenge and a chance to compete against history. Not sure if he is an LA guy, but he has bucketloads more of charisma than Howland. Still confused about the Alford quick hire. I know Alford had a buyout coming if he was still the UNM coach on April 1.

But yeah, at this point UCLA is a career killer.

I agree that with the factors you list Anthro and think those are aspects which made the position scary (from our perspective). I'm just saying there was another side and we had a good chance of keeping him.

I don't disagree w/ HCGM liking a challange and not afraid of anything, but it's just such a toxic coaching position right now.

Personally, I wasn't worried. Maybe I was just in blissful denial during our great run.

He did say that UCLA ranks about 6th in the country in terms of head coaching jobs when asked while in LA. So he must think its a pretty good job, even now. Luckily we don't have to worry about it anyway.
