I would guess whoever finishes last stays home. Or 8 and 9 can play a game to see who faces the 1. Would it be worth one thursday night game?

Or have seeds #2 through #9 play and the winner plays the #1 seed.

At least this way the winner of the regular season gets some kind of reward.

No, I don't think it would be worth it. Just let 9 stay home and eliminate the Thursday games.

What if he breaks the all time wins record on a 12 - 17 season? Awkward! Or what if he leaves in two years and doesn't get the record? Is he not worthy based on what he has accomplished already?

It's a much easier deal to recognize a player than a coach. No clear criteria for a coach and timing is difficult.
