What Do We Do With 9 Valley Teams?

Like the great CBB stated, expectations.

Considering this was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year and we were tabbed as a middle of the pack finisher, I think we held up our end pretty well.

Maybe, but I was still disappointed with our turn out. I guess that my expectations were too high. I have a number of friends who didn't make the trip this year who usually do. That and the fact that we didn't have any sell outs this year. The student turn out for regular season games was often not good this year either.

With that mind, what do you think our great leader is doing? Cowering in a corner somewhere?

I know I've gotten smacked here before for pointing out the obvious, but it once again seems like some of the posters here don't understand how organizations work.

First of all, sCUm hasn't officially received an invite to the C-7. Having said that, it would be premature for Elgin to make any formal comment until sCUm gets and accepts an official invite.

Second of all, our AD probably isn't 'cowering in a corner'. Keep in mind that he has a boss and a board of regents above the boss that he is accountable to. If he keeps them out of the loop he will slit his own throat.

Bottom line is that if you are frustrated and defensive about the current state of affairs, why don't you make sure you contact the board and the president and make your thoughts known.

I agree. Conference affiliation is not just about athletics. The Big 10 is an example of that. They were trying to find schools that fit their "mold" academically and athletically. I don't think the same can be said for the Big 12 or ACC.

Even without CU, we're not destined to one bid status. The conference he came from was because it was difficult for more than one team to become a top 100 program and especially a top 50 that would be required to be considered for an at-large. Even without CU, we could have 3-6 teams in the top 100 on any given year. Programs are moving forward as a whole I think.

And regardless of that, we're not destined to double digit seed status if we get in like he was in the Big South. With a good season, we're still capable of being a top 5 seed. Plus he can recruit at a much higher level. Gonzaga built their reputation in what was a one bid conference. It was worse than what the MVC will be without CU. And odds are we'll add a quality program that will help the Valley stay in the top 10 in RPI as a conference. The sky is not falling

And we have the scheduling mandate coming back. I do not claim to be an expert on the mandate, so if someone knows why the hell it went away in the first place I'd like to know. It did wonders for this league in '06 and we fell off a cliff without it. Does anyone know if it is coming back permanently?

The scheduling mandate won't let anyone do what Missery St. CC did. They lose money and tv time if they do. And there is only a couple of schools in the league that could probably lose some money. And I even doubt they would consider it.

Money and TV time is what is best for a program. They will have to schedule at a certain projected RPI to get everything. I am afraid that this is going to cause some teams to take buy games. I, for one, would love to see WSU take a buy game and do what they did to Syracuse a few years back. Taking the big money to go somewhere and get a win is priceless in so many aspects; recognition, money, recruiting, RPI.

And I think I am in the same boat as many that feel the MVC should go to 12. Get three decent programs, all that are better than EU and DU, and the MVC will be fine.

I still hold out hope for the slightest of chances that the MWC thing has some legs to it. I highly doubt it does, but I can still hang on to hope.

And if we're going to go to 12, we need to do it now. The A10 is going to be scrambling to add schools as well. And while they will add some eastern teams, it's very possible that they will target the Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana areas for some replacements that we may want. Not saying we'd be guaranteed to get everyone over them, but if we're late to the party, we lose some options to the east.

And once the A10 and the MVC start moving, the Horizon is going to finish off the Summit. If we want Denver, it could still happen once things start moving.

But you're also right about the mandate. I think it's in full effect for '14-'15 to give schools a couple of years to start beefing up their schedules and finishing contracts that don't help. Hopefully it's here to stay and it'll go a long way into making the conference tougher and losses less painful.
