But I think the ESPN guys were absolutely right in doubting the flagrant-1 call.
They don't have to be swung violently. Illegal contact with an elbow that occurs above the shoulders of an opponent when the elbows are not swung excessively per 4-36.7.a. "When the speed and vigor with which the arm(s) and elbow(s) are swung is such that injury could result if another player were contacted."

So it is completely a subjective call. The refs thought that there was a chance that an injury COULD have happened from that contact.

The one thing I liked is that both players slapped hands and knew that it just happened. No malice, no bad sportsmanship.

Exactly Rosewood...and NOT only that....you can see where the WSU defender is standing. Look at it again. There is NO WAY the Creighton guy is about to move his position to where the WSU defender is standing (there's no where for the Creighton guy to go). The elbow was thrown towards the defender's direction...thus the right call on the COURT was made.

      • I hated the "Daddy's Boy" thing. The kid could be playing in the Big 10 or the Big 12 and he chose to come play with his Dad. Maybe a lot of you didn't have a special relationship with your dads or with your sons, but trying to make fun of someone who does is totally f-ing classless.

and that why his own dad didn't offer him a scholarship when he was at Iowa St?

            • Nobody thought Doug could be this type of player. He was totally unheralded coming out of high school IRC

At the time - Wookie Sr was looking for the first train out of town. He was leaving Iowa one way or another

Nepotism is one of the things strangling our country.

The fact one such example is happening at Cretin University is the epitome of irony.

Greg had four bad seasons at Iowa State. If you were Doug's father in that situation, would you recruit your son to a school that currently sucks and is probably going to fire you? That would essentially have left Doug in a really crappy situation.

I certainly agree that the players handled it well -- that was one of the reasons I was surprised with the call that was ultimately made. Neither of them seemed to think it was that big a deal (of course Gibbs wouldn't, but the swingee didn't either, or at least didn't show it.

                        • If I recall, Doug was not a top BCS-type recruit when he graduated and he wasn't sure he could succeed in the Big 12. Clearly the guy had some healthy self-doubt and it probably continues to serve him well.

I think he might have verballed to Northern Iowa.

I am sure McD's situatino at Iowa State played into it too

                            • SoW didn't just verbal to UNI - he signed a LOI. When McD, The Elder, got the CU job, SoW asked for and was given a release from his LOI. UNI fans aren't real happy about that.

Not only that, even after he joined his dad at CU, they were considering redshirting him since they didn't think he would contribute much his freshmen year / be ready for D1 ball.

Greg's job status at Iowa State not-withstanding, there was more than one interview with him where they stated that they didn't think Dougie could be successful in the Big 12, and weren't sure if was ready for even the MVC.
