Then you have people in SC saying "according to sources close to Marshall, he has said he is interested in discussing an offer with USC after the season."

Anyway, as I listened to HCGM, he seemed mad that he had to address this, and was upset that it was even an issue.

I think he may be here for a while!
Coach has to realize that WSU is usually the dumpee in these situations -- like it has never happened before. That being said, you are right that we have not had enough contact with Coach to know what he might do in a situation like this. SC is his home and many, many coaches would love to work in their own backyard. Without having any inside information as to what kind of man he is (except what we see on the surface), we can only go by what we see and know. Kansas is cold, SC is not. Coach hates to lose, we are not winning. There is no place like home (now where have I heard that phrase before). Anyway, I want him to stay. I want to see what he can do with this program, considering it was left pretty hard up. Let's hope he tries to understand our concerns and why we might jump to some conclusions.

I think one of the biggest reason HCGM will not go is he had to know that Dave Odom job was in jepody last year and he was getting old, so he had to know SC would come open at least in the next few years. I mean why not stay at winthrop until it comes open. Instead he wanted to move and build his own program here at Wichita state.

I don't think winning or losing this year is going to have any influence on GM. Heck, if he goes to SC next year he's probably going to lose, too.

His outward excitement about next year's recruiting class is, IMO, a bigger factor than our final record this year. At least he knows what's coming in, and that's more of a "known" than what would awaits at USC.

About a coach "going home." How did that work for Michigan when they went after Les Miles? On a semi-related note, I understand that the LSU insiders told Les to either flat out deny that he was interested and withdraw his name for the Michigan job, or he no longer had a job at LSU. Now that is understanding that the program is bigger than any coach!

I think some coaches may want to coach at the alma mater, some may not want to, some may want to coach where ever the biggest paycheck is, some may want to coach where they are the big dog on campus. Who knows?

As ironic as it might be, have you considered that this year's coaching records might be a final determining factor between candidates on the short list at USC???

Actually, with regard to Marshall, I do not think WSU's record will have any bearing on whether or not USC wants to offer him the coaching job.

I don't think Coach is at the top of the list anyway. I honestly believe he expects and plans on being here next year. And with the incoming recruits he has reason to be excited as do we all.

I couldn't agree more. I would go even farther in saying I don't think he's in the Top 5. As a fan said on the SC message board:

If Marshall hadn't coached at Winthrop, would he even be on anybody's radar?

If Coach Marshall ends up with a losing record, it will be a tough sell to the SC boosters. It is possible, but tough.

Coach Marshall could leave today and the program would be in better shape than when Turgeon left what with the new players he has brought in and signed.
Plus Marshall would not poach the recruits , God I enjoy seeing Aggies lose, that is 'cause I'm from Texas and loathe the "cult", Turgeon is irrelevant to me.

While Marshall wouldn't "poach" the recruits, it is very possible they would choose to go with the school that was 2nd on their list after Wichita State. He got us some pretty talented players that could still get D1 scholarships somewhere, it's not like most of them only have a choice of Wichita State or go with Marshall should he leave.

But keep in mind, sf, that should anything happen, it will be at a time when most schools have already filled their schollies with fall signings or verbal commitments. The options for our recruits would be much more limited. See Evann Baker going to Qunnipiac (though I understand his brother was there, too). They might have to completely re-open their recruitment, effectively starting from scratch.
