  • Here's a thought for Coach Marshall:

Just wait on the South Carolina job. If you really want that particular job, then just wait about 4-5 years, and build something here. Then, after the coach that's hired this go-round is fired (which will, of course, happen because SC ain't a basketball school), you could move back home, and resurrect their program.

I know that seems like a slam against the Gamecocks, but it's probably going to happen. If Dave Odom (a really great basketball mind) can't fix the program, then I don't know why anybody else could?

    • I don't consider myself to have yellow colored glasses and understand that coaches will leave for the right situation. Roy Williams left one "elite" program to go to his dream job but not after one year. Huggins left after one year but he had some pretty outstanding recruiting classes and hiring Martin for continuity for the recruits appears to have been a good decision at this point. He left KSU-Manhattan in pretty good shape.

The main problem I would have should Marshall leave (I don't think it is that likely) is that it would leave WSU in one hell of a situation with recruiting just like last year. The prime players are already picked up and we would "have to" release the players WSU has already signed. Three years without a good/big recruiting class leaves a really empty program. That is a hole that would require years to dig out of. It can be done but it would be a huge set back providing any incoming coach could not talk the players into reaffirming their commitment to WSU. That may not be as hard because those players will get immediate playing time.

If what Marshall said last night is accurate, he believes a player commits to the school, not the coach. And if he used one school's time and resources to recruit a kid, he will not re-recruit him to his new school.

Should we face a coaching hire after this season, I happen to feel that Stutz would honor his commitment. I think Hannah might, as well. I have no idea about Murry and Kyles. Orukpe would go wherever Okon ends up.

        • No, that is optional for the school, although they usually do 'under the circumstances'.

Would we pull a K-State and bump Jans up to try to keep the recruits?

          • Also if he would leave ..and I think he is to far down the list of theirs to go...you never know who we would get that may bring recruits with them...so I think our future is bright...If he would go our AD would have to do something great to get people of his back..ya know

I think K-State regrets this decision in a few years. I like Janz but im not a believer in bumping a coach just for recruits.

While that was the best news coming from Marshall on last night’s show that does not mean the players won’t bolt for another program. And to answer snap’s question I don’t see anyone on the bench who looks to be ready to step in as head coach…just don’t see a Tad Boyle on the bench.

If we do end up with a new coach, he better not "bring recruits with him". That's a no-no. Do the names Mark Turgeon and Denzel Bowles ring a bell?

                  • If we would do hire one of our assistants to be our coach, i would be in favor of hiring Coach Grant

I don't doubt we would lose somebody to another school. But from what we know of Stutz, I just think there's a better than 50/50 chance he would stick with us. I'm confident about Hannah due to Ramon being here and comments he made about WSU being the only school he was interested in, shunning inquiries from other schools, including one or two from the Big 10.

I doubt that Schaus would do that. My guess is Tad Boyle just might be on top of Jim's just-in-case short list.

Tad is very good recruiter and word is he was very fond of Wichita.

I would grant releases to LOI only on the condiiton that the player at least give Tad an fair chance to re-recruit them.

I'm still counting on SC going after and reeling in Anthony Grant or another high profile young coach and HCGM being here for many years.

                          But you just never know.

I suspect JS would only give the release after a new coach has had the chance to speak with the recruit. I think that's how he handled it last April.

                            • Although I do believe Grant is the front-runner for the job at SC, my only concern is that another coaching job better than the SC one will turn up and he'll bounce over to that one. We are talking about a guy who a Billy Donovan 180 from getting the Florida job which is better than the SC job.
If he takes another position other than the SC one, then GM (IMO) is next in line.

So there are three things with Grant that need to go our way, first, SC offers him the job, second, no other higher profile program offers him a job, and third he accepts the SC job.

Other than SC, has anyone heard of another opening by season's end of a high profile or BCS program that could potentially lure Grant?

The reason I put quotes around "have to" is that technically we do not have to but it is common to do so, similar to last year. Frankly I think that if Marshall is putting 100% effort into coaching and recruiting for the Shockers then there can be no questions out there about him ever considering an offer now or at the end of this season. If there is a "question" then recruiting to a program that you may not be coaching after this year is pointless. Having said that, reading the press release, and listening to the quotes on Channel 3 this morning I think that Marshall is intent on being here next year with respect to coaching and recruiting and anything else is not being considered one iota.
