Of course, nothing Marshall could have said would have satisfied them anyway, because there are plenty of examples available of coaches saying there weren't leaving, weren't candidates for a given job, etc., etc., who then went on and did exactly the opposite. If Marshall had withdrawn his name from speculation, they'd have just pointed to people like Nick Saban and said that you can't believe what coaches say anyway. So saying that it would have been nice for Marshall to be unequivocal is a crock, because an unequivocal statement only matters if you believe it, BOBB, and most of this crew wouldn't have believed it anyway.

As verbeak notes, if Marshall had thought he was the heir apparent at South Carolina he could have stayed in his comfortable job at Winthrop, making decent money, being king of Rock Hill SC, and biding his time. After all, Dave Odom didn't accumulate his disappointing SEC record overnight, and he didn't suddenly turn 65. I didn't know Odom was that old, because I don't care about South Carolina basketball -- but you can bet Marshall did. And yet he left and got himself into a challenging situation at WSU that he's about to recruit his way out of.

So we're now supposed to believe that he'd go back, start over yet again, and re-enact this year -- or worse -- in a conference where it's tougher to win big than it is in the Valley? Yeah, right.

Watcher, that was a post of beauty... Shockernet HOF material! :good:

After reading the posting guidelines I figured it best to cut out the quotes, even though it wasn't the full article, and post my own summary of each point.

            1) Sources close to Marshall said that he would entertain an offer at the end of the season.

            2) It was confirmed with sources close to the USC AD that there has been no contact with Marshall since the announcement from Odom.

            3) There is no clause in the contract that says that there won't be a buyout if USC comes callin.

            4) 7 names on the preliminary list from Hyman (alphabetical):
            -Jeff Capel (OU)
            -Chris Collins (Duke Assistant)
            -Matt Doherty (SMU)
            -Anthony Grant (VCU)
            -Bobby Lutz (Charlotte)
            -Marshall
            -Richard Stansbury (Mississippi St)

            • So basically, our best hope is Marshall isn't their top choice and that one of their top choices accepts the position.

                • and all we can really do now is just concetrate on this basketball team, because if he goes, he goes, there is nothing we can do about it.

I don't have a problem with him leaving if he chooses to do so. I think our program has escalated high enougth to attract top coaching talent. What is the biggest concern for me is the possibility of losing all those great recruits and the new coach having to scramble and piece together a new class. We need these recruits badly.

I agree about the attraction to an extent. Although if we lose a 2nd coach within 2 years, finish in the bottom half of the valley and lose our recruits which gives us basically 2-3 poor recruiting classes....not sure too many of the other coaches that we would like to see here would want to take on that much of a rebuild. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it unfolds. Until then, just gonna support my Shox!!!

                            • Part of the problem is that everyone on here is a big Shocker fan with yellow glasses on, although we may think of us being a destination, most coaches coming here just think of us as a stopover for awhile.

Everyone has aspirations and dreams in life, and most would accept some job offer that traveled down the road towards them. That's the reality of the situation.

CGM is an honorable man and coach, and will handle things in the best way he can, but will do, in the long run, what is best for him and his family. He has had incredible pressure on him and his staff since coming here, and I felt that Bob Lutz's 'over the top' statement regarding the issue was way out of line.

Coach doesn't need additional pressure put on him, by Lutz or us. He knows we all want him here.

                              • Well I thought he might issue a definitive statement either way – probably wishful thinking on my part. He has certainly left the door open. Marshall leaving would be a huge blow to the WSU program. Attracting another quality coach at this point would be much more difficult than some of you realize.

We just have to hope that Marshall is not USC's first choice and that someone like Grant eventually takes the job.
