January 17, 1998. I believe that was the first time Yours Truly ever stepped into The Roundhouse. I went with my dad and a friend to a women’s/men’s doubleheader.
The women played SMS. We knew all about a young freshman named Jackie Stiles because she lit up my school the year before, scoring 25 points…in the first quarter (55 total). Jackie still impressed with 38 points, but the Shocks still prevailed 87-82. Because that seating was general admission and we were there when the doors opened, we sat on the first row right by the north tunnel.
In the men’s game against Southern Illinois, SIU led by 2 and had two late FTs that could’ve iced the game. But both clanked, and WSU got the rebound and called timeout. Jason took the inbound pass down the court, stopped at the top of the key, and drained one at the buzzer.
Hell of a start to my Shocker Basketball fandom. If I only knew what was in store for the future.

If you don't think Jason Perez belongs in that group, I don't know what to tell you except that you don't understand the game of basketball. His understanding of team play and defensive positioning as well as his instincts rival the great Fred VanVleet. He was also as strong as an ox. He would not be outclassed in any way, shape or form.
I loved Jason's effort, and he had a sharpshooter's eye. He was a defensive menace... against children. I've even heard that he was "strong as an ox"!!! (wonders aloud if anybody ever tried to put a yoke on him..) Couldn't dribble though, and got his pocket picked the second he went into the lane.. thus incomplete and not first team material IMO.
I understand this man is very important to you. I mean no offense. Please tell your godson hi for me!

He never stopped improving. When he came back to scrimmage in the summer he had finally shed Fifi and was a complete murderer around the basket. One of my favorite Shocker centers of all time! What a sweet and unstoppable baseline fadeaway!

Paul Miller was a beast and he showed what he could do against Michigan State's big man. Great choice for all-calendar award also. Wish I had that topless shot to post right now!

I hear ya brother! But let's walk through this shall we?
If we have Perez on the team tomorrow, he instantly becomes a shooting threat IF he gets open. The kind of length on the guards that will be defending him will be completely foreign. In fact, I remember him getting stuffed on occasion. He can't drive either. So defenders are going to smother him. He also can't walk the ball up the floor as PG. He will be aggressive at going after rebounds, but with his limited vertical and length... he'll be counting on timing/brains (angles). Everybody around him will be on average taller and more athletic than what he faced back in the 90's.
And how do you think he'll fare guarding better athletes with longer arms?
No Bueno.

Quite the statement, considering how many things he gets wrong about.
Trolllololol
Guys, guys, guys.... everybody knows that a move to the AAC was a big step up in average athleticism over the MVC. Even Gregg Marshall himself said that. Now... I understand that today's AAC isn't exactly the 2017 AAC, but amazingly, the average athleticism still hasn't dropped off that far. It's kind of an FBS football thing. Plus, these schools are located in major metros. You're gonna have some 'dudes' in big cities that swing and miss on a Power 4 conference, then settle for the hometown option.
The interesting thing we should be talking about is how very athletic teams don't automatically translate into wins. In fact, the AAC was kind of a bruiser league when we joined. Everybody just beat up on each other. But the average quality in thoroughbreds is identifiable immediately over the MVC. I actually watched 5 mins. of an NIU game the other night. Children.
Now consider the MVC back in 1997...

6th ALL TIME leading scorer.
19th ALL TIME leading rebounder
15th ALL TIME assists
2nd ALL TIME in steals, only surpassed by the legendary Fred Van Vleet in his final NCAA tourney games (Fred played 24 more total games than Jason).
Jason was one of the best defensive players in my lifetime. Tekele Cotton like.
Can you IMAGINE his stats if he'd had any help or coaching at all?
I also nominate Connor Frankamp. He had the misfortune of being on the same team as Fred or his numbers likely are off the charts.

You don't know enough about the game to understand how his skill level and intelligence (as well as effort) carried a guy that was more athletic than you think. He would have been even better on the best WSU teams of the 2010s and would have started on all but the very best.
