Matt will be a head coach someday. He probably needs either more time at Texas Tech or a stop off at a smaller school before he would consider him.

Ryan Martin might or might not still be coaching. He got hit pretty hard with some NCAA violations at Northern Colorado.
GS is doing great, raising a beautiful, perfect family. I doubt he'd have interest, but who knows. Clearly he'd need experience somewhere.

I've thought about Matty B for a year or so. He's probably 38ish now? Everything is different today. The idea that we're going to be able to afford and then make a splashy, experienced hire is pie in the sky. That being said, we are an extremely desirable destination for a hungry coach with high aspirations. Getting someone that believes in and loves this program wouldn't hurt. I'd be under no delusions about his possible success.

Obviously someone needs to vet him and make sure he's capable of doing the job. But I really like how UNT and now TT go about their business. A lot. If the vetting went well, I'd damned sure pull the trigger.

    • I'm still under the mindset of we should be considering Adrian Griffin. NBA experience, had the bucks rolling before politics came into play, and apparently wanted this job before we hired HCIB. Since he was very quickly termed from the Bucks, there is probably a good chance he's still getting a good chunk of salary, so might be willing to take a more back loaded contract to get back coaching.

      edit:

"While Griffin won't be coaching the team, he is still going to be paid by the Bucks. Milwaukee is on the hook to pay Griffin through the 2026-27 season — the same length as RIvers' new deal.

The Athletic reported at the time of his hiring that Griffin would be paid roughly $4 million per year. So, even after this season, Milwaukee has to pay out additional $12 million to Griffin over the next three seasons.

So yea ... he's getting 4 million a year until after we have the other 2 coaches off the books. give him a back loaded contract and make the move right now.

I would be fully on board with bringing Griffin in. The NBA experience is something he can sell kids. He obviously has connections, and some of those connections can probably join him on the bench and recruit pretty well themselves. Not that it's a main factor, but he is a local guy and his name still carries some weight I would guess with older people and he may be able to help generate some contributions to NIL to assist in his recruiting. Being local may also help boost early attendance as Wichita loves to see their own succeed. And if he has the tiniest bit of charisma he's already a major step up over the IB and PM.

And you're right. If he's already guaranteed $4M from the Bucks, he might be willing to take a back loaded and/or incentivized deal to help the department get things in order to best help propel him and his new program forward. And since he's not currently working, there would be nothing stopping Saal or someone close to him from reaching out and checking if there's still any interest.

I can't speak for anyone else, but his hiring would actually excite me, which hasn't happened for me since 3G was hired.

Also, his $4M a year goes a lot further in ICT than most anywhere else in the country.

Carpenter Place - A blessing to many young girls/women
ICT S.O.S - Great local cause fighting against human trafficking
Wartick Insurance Agency - Saved me money with more coverage.

        • Not advocating for either, but a couple of notable coaches who might be fired at end of season (and therefore would have buyout payments supplementing their salary) are Wes Miller at Cincinnati and Steve Forbes at Wake Forest.

Id pass on both. I’d take Griffin in a heartbeat. He was SO good with the Bucks. Plus that NBA connection makes NIL load easier, and has lots of potential. He’s who I want the most at the moment to be honest

I agree with the notion that our "spot" now of what we can afford puts us in a place where we get the hungry coach on the rise. While it was a different era of course, both Turg and Marshall fit that notion.

I do get a little nervous when NBA coaches come to college, but he is definitely an intriguing option. Would hope that he could build a strong staff to help him navigate the challenges of CBB.

I'm just hopeful ADKS can do something to move on from HCPM and revitalize the program.

                • Who would even be a "splash" hire right now? Feel like a lot of the big names got taken over the last two seasons.

                  • Today's college cesspool may not be that inviting to someone with 12M severance package. I mean we talk nonstop about how fuqed up it is and routinely see coaches exiting the game on their own will.

The coaches who are winning games still seem to mostly like it.

Tony Bennett, Jay Wright and others would like a word.

                        • I would also hope we would see if Ross Hodge at N Texas has any interest. Currently making $700K at UNT. About half of what we are paying Mills with about twice the success in the same 2 year period.

Retirement rumors around Wright had lingered for years. Bennett is probably the better example.

Regardless, it's not like there is a wave of younger coaches leaving because of NIL, it's all older guys who could have retired for any reason.

lol where in the hell is Steve Forbes going? Does Wake have Timmy's son in the pipeline and Forbes called his mother a dirty name?

Maybe. But I would think someone who has dealt with NBA players might be more accepting to a lot of the changes that have happened
