That's the end of his 3rd year and the date on which his early termination means we pay him 75% of the remainder of his contract and not 100%. The big issue with firing Mills then is June 30 is pretty late in the offseason to be looking for a new head coach.

There is, however, an earlier possibility. April 2026 is when the payments to Brown end. If we've gotten comfortable paying 3 coaches, firing Mills at the end of next season (March 2026) and hiring a new coach after April 2026 means we are still paying three coaches.

The payments to Marshall end in December 2026, which will free up more room. If we move on from Mills after next season, whatever new coach we hire could get a contract that materially balloons his second year.
Why coupldn't we hire a new coach Arpil 1 or so, but not terminate Mills until June 30. I'm not aware of anything that says there can only be one head coach on the staff at the same time. there has to be some way to get a new hire before firing the outgoing guy.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

      1. Pretty sure there are NCAA rules about coach limits.
      2. If it went to court, it would be pretty easy for Mills to argue that the hiring of his replacement is the official notice of termination so he should get 100% and not 75%.
