DWill and Cotton were mediocre 3 point shooters last year. Malcolm was mediocre at Oregon. Early was mediocre in JUCO. White and Wessel were less poor last year. Wiggins and Baker are our only GOOD (40%+) three point shooters, and neither has played a D-I season. Look around the MVC. Most teams have two or three guys shooting over 40% (some well over). We are going to be a mediocre shooting team no matter who is on the floor.

We only had one over 40% last year. You can make up for that by having a number of guys that still have to be guarded. We should have that. I don't know if Armstead or Early will fit into that category, but Wessel has worked hard on his shot and looks good so far. We know Baker is a legit threat. There's two. Wiggins we believe should be one. DWill is good enough to keep teams honest. Poor start so far. Same for Cotton. If White can show that he can knock some down we'll be okay. Also, FVV should shoot well enough as well. We're not shooting well after 4 games, but it's also only 4 games. We have the players to make it all work. I'd rather have 7 guys that can hit 33 to 38 percent than 2 guys shoot 40+ and maybe one other that shoots in the other range. We don't have a Ragland on this team right now, but we have a lot of guys capable of knocking down shots.

Ragland shot 31.3% from 3 his first year here. for the JuCo guys, I think the progression goes like this:

Step 1: Learn to play D
Step 2: Learn the offensive system
Step 3: Work on shooting

It may be mid-season or later before the shooting comes around for Early and Wiggins.

I doubt White will see enough minutes for his shooting % to matter in any significant way.

What I was saying is that if you are promoting our top 5 3 point shooters from last year being better than this year and DWill was #3 and Cotton was tied for #4, then we're as good at #3 and #4 (or #5) this year as last. Now, does anyone compare to Rags...not likely, but Wessel and Baker together might be close to equaling Rags and Smith. After that group, we have more potential quality 3 pt shooters to have one, maybe two, equal Kyles/Cotton's %.

So, again, is anybody as good as Rags...probably not. Will our overall 3 pt shooting be close to last year with just maybe more pontential threats from there...I think yes. Particulaly as the season goes on.

My guess, Gregg will (and should) emphasis the inside game because its a strength. Watch for the 3-pt hancuffs to come on if % don't improve. Hell, someone in another thread mentioned Lufile warming up shooting 3's. Anybody can shoot them...

Maybe that will be the case. It's more likely that Baker is a little better than Kyles and Wessel won't as good as Smith. Early is probably about as good as Murry (though he hasn't shown it). Minus Rags, we would have been 7th or 8th in the Valley last year in 3 point %. That's about what I expect. I'd rather have 2 guys that can shoot it above 42% than 9 that can hit 33%.
