He was hired the Wednesday following the first round of the tournament last year. Meaning a year ago today was his first full day on the job.

Absolutely. He didn't need to hire staff, move his family, get to know members of his new team, (whose staying whose going) or anything prior to recruiting the portal. He just wasted weeks of time by doing those things.

For comparison's sake, not like this really makes a huge difference IMO, but the 22nd last year would be the 27th on this year's calendar. Our last game this year was the 15th. 16, 17, 18. 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27- is 12 extra days, with his staff already set. I understand you said from opening of the portal.

Seems like it could make a pretty big difference to me. But I guess we will see.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't think a high transfer recruit would look at the Shocks. There's just not enough of a sample size yet for a player to go "yeah, Paul Mills is my guy." With fHCGM, he could always say, "look, I've helped numerous guys get their shot at the big league." Best bet is probably higher profile guys from 2 years or so ago that didn't get much playing time, who might be overlooked because everyone is looking for the hot potato.

I don’t think it’s as important to get a “high transfer recruit” as it is to snag dudes that are good enough to play at the Div I level and with chips on their shoulders. The good news here is that the transfer portal is going to be full of kids who are looking to play more minutes and make their mark. The vast majority of them are not going to end up on a P5 roster. As many here have posted, this is where we find out if HCPM can recruit a group of youngsters who can come together and win basketball games.

The crickets we have heard is the lack of transfer-portal players who've signed with new teams so far this offseason. Any players. Any teams. I was echoing Stick's statement that, according to everyone on here, all the good transfer-portal players were gone last offseason by the time Paul Mills got up to speed. If that logic were followed, then, we would have had a slew of new signees by now. But here we are almost a week after Mills was hired last offseason, and the transfer-portal season has barely begun. I dare say in a month from now it will be in full swing.

But no, you are right. This offseason, Paul Mills isn't having to box all his things up, carry them out of the house, buy pizza and a sixpack for all his friends he convinced to come help him move, and throw an extra sixpack to that one friend who owns a truck, then move them all into storage while he crashes on his friend in Wichita's house while he looks for an apartment.

I mean, I know every time I've started a new job my employer didn't expect anything for a few months because of... reasons.

I vote this. I don't give two sh*ts about some big name player or scorer. I want basketball players. Actual basketball players. Players that can dribble, pass, make baskets, box out, and that want to play hard every play. I want foot speed. Some bulk or height would be nice as long as they know how to use it. Free throw shooting is a plus. (why does this feel like a job listing?)

I'm not even sure how I would describe a successful season anymore, it's just been too damn long. Did KU have a successful season? How much did the shell out for all those players to have a mediocre conference run and a flat tourney game or two? Did Drake have a good season? They went like 28-6 or something and got to the dance where they didn't win a game. But still, is that a good year? And now they have players that are transferring out? SO what does Drake have to look forward to next season then? Wow I miss the old days.

The (super) powers that be would have the general public believe there are only 5 conferences that really matter in basketball. If I had to guess, one way or another, this year, or 5 years down the road, they'll find a way to make it happen and there will not longer be "inclusions" into their tournament, there will be "exclusions."

I'd rather see the groundwork being laid for a very good basketball program, that has the opportunity to play in a post season tournament somewhere, even if it is a private tournament that doesn't include the big boys. I can't help but wonder how the ratings would play out between two very different type of post season tournaments. I think about KU, Duke, Michigan State, any this could be any program (I would probably start the shift away from the term "school" at this point, how they are just swooned over by the media in the off season, the preseason, the build up to the post season play....They're dripping in so much sugar at this point that it's just a gross, sticky mess and the last thing I want at this point in a long season is to watch another Auburn-North Carolina game, I mean, I don't even watch the NBA.

Also ... he had 2 High School aged kids .. they wouldn't have moved until after the semester (so... May) was over anyways. Also, according to his wife, she handled all the items in their previous moves. So that is just such a weird excuse.

Not sure what the 5 conferences are now. The Pac 12 is down to Pac 2. Are we now P4 or is there another conference that moves into the 5th spot?

Oh, I didn't realize PMs wife was meeting with all of his old team, new team as well as hiring his staff. I guess he had nothing to do with the sale of his old house, finding a new home or any of that. So, I guess you're right, he should have recruits on the books week 1 and taken the time to keep you(stick) informed of his every recruiting move, Because you need to know what's going on.

I mean every time I have started a new job employers have been understanding that there is some adjustment period. Maybe I have just had good employers.

He had nothing to do with selling or buying the homes as his wife even states.

Basically, once he was hired all he had to focus on was basketball. Everything else you and others bring up is just ridiculous bullshit to try and make even more excuses for how shitty this team was.

Yes, he had to hire a staff, and that took longer than it should have and that's on him. Most new coaches have at least one or two assistants ready to go pretty damn quickly and they all should have contacts in which to use to jump into recruiting. If he sat around with his thumb up his ass until every assistant was hired and briefed well that's on him as well. He had a job to do. He didn't do it well last year. Lets hope he does better this spring or else we're in for another rough and depressing year and we'll watch as attendance continues to decline.
