Mills needs to drop those lavender scented candles. They're estrogenic boosting...

Well ... he's primarily a tobacco vanilla man. But sometimes a man just has to lavender, ya know?

      • I think Mills may have better player retention in the transfer portal era than Marshall had in the pre-portal era.

            • Still a lot of basketball left to play, but I think next season will be HCPM's last at WSU. You can point to the 8-2 start, but you'd be ignoring the many red flags whenever this team faces an opponent with a pulse.

Is it productive to resurrect this thread? Probably not, but I'm fighting apathy and I'd rather not go gentle into that good night.

Mills is now 4-47 in Q1 or Q2 Ken Pom regular season games including 2-9 at WSU for his career.

My secondary concern is that the AD who hired Mills will likely be hiring the replacement. The perceived red flags when Mills was hired appear to have been justified:

                  1) Didn't show he could beat good teams with any frequency.
                  2) Only found success with Max Abmas as his PG.
                  3) Never had a good defense, something that is engrained in WSU basketball DNA.

The big boys are going to have to step up to make that happen. Making the right hire for baseball was needed but not necessarily critical. I think ADKS has done pretty well there but it is early. Making a good hire for WBB would be nice but not all that important or significant. ADKS could swing and miss there and recover.

However, hiring the right MBB coach was absolutely critical with no room for swing and miss, or a foul ball, or a single, or a double, or a triple. It needed to be a home run. At this point, although we are early in year 2, it doesn't appear that HCPM is anywhere close to the home run hire needed. Perhaps ADKS did the best he could with resources available and the other financial challenges WSU sports are facing.

Unless, the big boys decide to step up and bail us out the I think HCPM will be here at least 2 more years after this year. Just not sure the funds are there to do anything about that. Has to be a reason that the WSU-ICAA has chosen to go dark with their annual financial report.

Something has to give or change in a big way. The term "existential threat" is probably overused this days but WSU's ability to continue as a viable D-1 athletic program appears to be in real jeopardy.

We will probably see some kind of realignment in college sports in the next few years but I don't see WSU participating in the top rung of whatever that turns out to be.

If that’s true, then I’m done. I don’t think I can take another 2 years of this. Life’s preciously short, and watching us fall short of the banner year in and year out is too depressing to continue wasting time on.

Hope Saal is listening. Things are not well.

                      • Mills could take the team we have right now and absolutely win a championship and go to the NCAA tourney...

                        ... in the Summit League.

The Scott Drew coaching tree doesn't seem to be doing well in Kansas.

                        • I get the feeling that some of you just lead unhappy lives. We all want success. We all want wins. We don’t have the money for it. This is what we have the money for. You can’t shop at the dollar store and expect high end quality. If schools were cars, we’d be a Kia. Go cheer for a different school if you don’t like it. It’s not changing any time soon unless fans open their wallets. I haven’t and won’t. It is what it is. Wichita is not a financial power.

Accept it or not but quit belly aching about it.

Kia’s kind of a bad example, because they’ve done pretty well with the rebrand and are doing well in Europe as far as sales go, I’m pretty sure.

I lead a very happy life, all things considered. But Wichita used to be a financial power, actually. Marshall was one of the highest paid coaches. So the capability is, and was, there. But the fallout of everything is brought us to ruin and I’m not sure we’re actually capable of coming back at this point. It would take some drastic moves, and much like the city of Wichita itself, they’re not very innovative.

ADKS knows exactly what is going on. He has far more information than any of us do and he actually does know what is or isn't going on behind the scenes. I am sure he is doing his very best but that doesn't mean he will get the job done. I am not sure any Shocker AD has faced bigger and tougher challenges than what is facing ADKS and most of it he didn't cause. Although dumping Isaac Brown and hiring Paul Mills hasn't worked out so well.

Yeah to be clear, I don’t blame ADKS. I think he’s in an impossible position tbh. Not easy when you’re supposed to win back donors who promised publicly to turn their back based on a firing that the nation was calling for.
