Failure is that dire. We'd be deep in the red paying three coaches with the lowest fan engagement in decades, in a near MVC-level conference that won't give us much help. We could be talking about an end to the program at that point.
And making matters worse, we have cards stacked against us in this search. We need to succeed with the money we have, with the circumstances we've created, and in the conference we are in. We need to somehow punch above our weight class.

Houston - big loss and would be for ANY conference.
Cincy - While their fan support is there, results on the court havent been and probably won't be for a bit longer. Short term, this isn't impossible to replace.
UCF - been mediocre most years. They are 100% football school. Their basketball results will be replaced.
Tulane, Memphis and even Temple would crush the Valley most nights. Along with Wichita State once we get stabilized.
And if SMU bolts....see UCF comments and apply to them as well, for the most part."He called me around noon and was thrilled," Brandt said. "He said he was going to be a Shocker forever." -- RIP Guy, you WILL indeed be a Shocker forever!

The AAC is barely a two-bid conference now. I don't think there are two bids consistently from among the teams left after Houston and Cincinnati leave.
Who cares if it is five spots better than MVC if both are one-bid conferences? From our standpoint, those are functionally the same. The money will dry up significantly at the next media deal and after Houston's NCAA credits are gone.
This isn't about basketball, it is about money and recruiting. The AAC's advantages on those fronts went down from absolute to relative and it is just one additional layer of **** to deal with. We had the #1 team in the country play at home this year, and next year we'll have something like North Texas or UAB, complete nothings. That won't help us rebuild likely our entire roster or get any butts in the seats.

I expect IB will have a lower level job before April is half over. His recruiting should make him an immediate winner in a lower level conference. That should save WSU around $600,000 a year, which seems like a reasonable salary for him (and what FADDB SHOULD have signed him for).
It's impossible to accurately predict whether players stay or leave. The entire team might enter the portal, but the new coach will have a chance to recruit them. JP might be the most likely to leave if Brown takes the AC Pierre with him. Flanagan is likely to be gone. Bell likely to stick around.
Let's hope some of them have local GF's.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.
