  • if you are continually leapfrogging underclassmen with junior college transfers, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy that you will need more and more junior college transfers.

    • @wufan: signing high school kids that are unlikely to qualify doesn't count.

Then name the kids you preferred that HCGM turned down. Who are these top flight high-schoolers that we decided we didn't want?

I can name one; Gavin Thurman.

            • So 3B, would you rather recruit a HS player that will be here for four years, but likely never start, or a one and done (or possibly two and done) HS player that will lead you to post-season play and then likely turn pro in one league or another?

              • There's a big difference with a HS kid that's only here for a year or two and then goes pro. Putting players in the NBA and having those types of talent will get you all over SportsCenter and make you visible to so many more people.

                    • Recruiting depends on your existing roster makeup.

I'll answer-#2. You want to recruit the best players that you can not just recruit freshmen to fill out a roster.

There's a lot of real estate between a one and done and a 4 yr benchwarmer.

                          • Unless you wanna start over every 4 years, you need to keep the classes somewhat even. Jucos this year is a no-brainer.

I agree with Pin that there is no doubt that class balance should be/is the goal. No doubt that one would prefer HS AA's to JC AA's. But if we have as good a frosh class as we think, it'll be more difficult to recruit after they become starters. We need to continue to mix them together and recruit the best talent. You are right that Juco players next year are a no brainer. With all of the frosh/sophs that we will have on the roster next year. I think that our staff wants us to play at a high level every year and in the MVC, that is difficult to do. I think that we'll have to continue to mix juco's with freshmen classes to get big time athletes. The most important thing is that we have high quality, unselfish players whether they be juco players or not who want to put the team first.

                              • This coaching staff has better connections to recruiting JuCo AA's than HS AA's. I think they've demonstrated that they can sign top-10 or top-20 JC players regularly. We only get them for 2 years, but generally they're ready to play at this level immediately or early in their first year. PG's can take a little longer. Unless a school is signing McD's AA's, or has no option but to give Fr a lot of plying time, Fr usually take a year or more before they're "ready". So, you only "lose" one year with a JC.

Top-10 or top-20 JC's are probably the equivalent of HS players in the top 50 - 100 category. Those players are really difficult to sign. They all want the big TV contracts and expect to go NBA early. Marshall is making inroads in that area, but the BCS bias makes those players difficult to sign. Why not go with equivalent talent, one less productive year, ready-to-play JC's, who seem to want to play for Marshall.

There's another coach in the state who has a lengthy track record with JC players. His name is Bill Snyder. I don't hear many people questioning hius recruiting.
