    • Of course, this is what the NCAA does. Slaps the wrists of the Big Boys and destroys little brother.

      • That really is a stupid decision by the NCAA, no question. But I also have to question the kid's decision to go to a lower level. He won't be able to keep his major, which is supposed to be the reason he chose Montana State, so that he can play one more year of basketball. It seems to me if he really wants that degree, he'd take the extra scholarship year at MSU and get it. Unless he's really wanting a degree in a different area, he's putting hoops ahead of academics.

        • Maybe there's a lower level school with a similar degree. I can't blame the guy for wanting to play one more year.

Total crap. Certainly some wealthy lawyer will take his case pro-bono?

5 years to play 4 my friend. An entire lifetime to graduate with the degree you want.

              • Perhaps some of the fine lawyers on this fine forum can answer this question.

Since the NCAA is clearly a monopoly, to what extent is it regulated by the federal government?

                • The NCAA is basically unregulated. It is a "voluntary" organization. Schools are not forced to join. Schools have to pay to join the NCAA. The NCAA uses the offer of payment for membership as a demonstration that its members support their activities. Therefore, it is not a monopoly. Any school or group of schools is free to set up another association. See, it's not a monopoly.

The only problem with using that as the argument for why the NCAA is not a monopoly, is that the BCS schools threaten to leave any time they don't get what they want. If that happens, the NCAA's national championship becomes a version of Bracket Busters. So, the NCAA lives by the Golden Rule - those with the gold, rule!
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'
