    • Watched a practice last week. Color me cautiously optimistic. The coaches have a lot of work to do with the new faces but there is a lot of talent and athleticism. I think the coaching staff succeeded in bringing in better shooters. The players were enthusiastic, plus the coaching staff was animated and vocal. Still, with all the new faces this team will take some time. I suspect we will have some early unexpected results, good and bad.

And next year could begin a new group again. So if the turnover continues, this will be the everlasting excuse.

            • Unfortunately, significant turnover is now just part of college basketball.

bench players will be leaving all levels of programs in search of playing time. Not much anyone can do about that. We gotta keep our starters and emerging talent from leaving.

Exactly. Sampson doesn't seem to have this issue. And he's a damn tough coach.

Unfortunately, one of those better shooters on display probably won't get to play this year.

Please don't even be the least bit optimistic...that will ruffle the feathers of the basketball experts here who ONLY deal in gloom and doom...

                          • Shockers basketball hosts media day at Koch Arena (ksn.com)

"WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita State University’s (WSU) Men’s and Women’s Shocker basketball teams had their annual media day at Charles Koch Arena Wednesday afternoon. The Men’s team comes into this season with 12 new players this season. Craig Porter Jr. and Kenny Pohto are actually the only two returning players who earned significant playing time last season. This huge turnover in the roster might be a big reason why the AAC Preseason Poll had the Shockers finishing 8th in the conference. While it is just a preseason poll, the Shockers are going to use it as motivation going into the season.

“Of course it is,” said Brown. “I think these guys are playing with a chip on their shoulder, kind of like they did two years ago when we were picked 7th. But you can’t worry about preseason rankings, you have to go out and play the basketball games. We feel like we have enough in our locker room in order to win games this year.”

WSU Senior Point Guard Craig Porter Jr. added, “It’s definitely motivation, like my first year here, whole new team, same scenario, we were picked 7th, and we finished 1st. Basketball is basketball; I mean, everyone knows how to play at this level. I don’t think it’s anything more than that, and I feel like we’re prepared to show people what we have.”

                            • Quotables: Media Day

The long days of Summer are over, and the Fall season has begun. We are now less than 50 days before the official start of Shocker Basketball. The summer-time poll, as a group, pedicted 19.9 wins (low expectations). So...are you feeling the Better, Same, or Worse with your expectations for the 2022-23 campaign?

A lot of talk about focusing on defense and rebounding and that the guys who do that will be the guys who play.
