As an FSU alum ... FSU basketball coach is a terrible, terrible job.

I believe Hamilton just got a raise to something like $1.6M this year, and that's after winning the ACC tournament, a Sweet 16 bid last year, multiple NCAA bids, I believe five 20 win seasons in the last 6 (with one 19 win season tossed in), etc., etc. I believe FSU ranks dead last in basketball revenue among the ACC schools. Hamilton is constantly fighting to get his assistants paid better. The fanbase is generally lukewarm on basketball, and we play at the Tallahassee Civic Center off-campus, which seats slightly more than WSU's (around 12k), but is about 25 years older. Even at the best FSU's basketball program has been in decades for the 2010-2011 season we only averaged 9k fans (about 75% capacity ...) and only really selling out the Duke/UNC/Florida games. It's a traditional football school, and basketball is getting a lot more support now (I believe the Duke game was the fastest sellout for students in FSU sports history), but it's still not even in the ballpark that football is in.

Coaching WSU basketball is a better job than FSU. Hamilton is a great coach for building the kind of success he has there with such limited support from the fan base or front office. He's just started getting the kind of recruits that he needs to be even middle of the pack in the ACC. I love FSU, but him leading us to the ACC title last year was like Duke winning the ACC in football in regards to the talent level, fan support, and money involved. Realistically, we don't deserve the success we've had the last few years and still haven't made the commitment to basketball we need to make to sustain it.

And Hamilton isn't likely to go to Illinois. The guy is almost 70. He'll retire at FSU unless he gets really pissed off. I was a little worried until I found out his age ... I don't see a guy almost at 70 taking on a rebuilding job when he has a solid program already in place.

I think Martin unquestionably would have gone for the FSU job over USC, though. FSU IS a better job than SC, and Martin would rather be in Florida.

I think the only schools we should be worried about Marshall going to, and that Marshall should ever care to look at, are traditional basketball powerhouses. Schools that will pay him $2-3M, are basketball focused over football, are in major conferences, have a history of success, and where Marshall is the first choice. That should be the checklist, and it's very possible one of those schools will come calling. But for now I wouldn't worry.
Thanks for the additional info, @Rlh04d:. Except for one thing. As one gets older (myself), I hate comments that make me feel like I should be having someone built that pine box sooner than later. Yes, Hamilton is getting closer to 70, but in my way of thinking, HE'S ONLY 63! :banghead:

Please don't rush such things. Thank you. :smile-new:

    • Although I no longer have any direct contact with ES, I used to quite often. And everytime he was near he seemed like and was a great guy. Can be a little quiet,, but calm, confident and loves WSU. I think he is a perfect compliment to HCGM.

Can't wait to see Marshall in St. Louis next year. I'm sure Missouri Valley officials feel the same.

ShockRef, I thought it was pretty obvious that I was being facetious with remarks regarding Mike Kennedy. I'm sorry you missed the mark.

Also, I find it odd that people are making disparaging remarks about our AD, after he has retained the best coach to coach at WSU in 30 some odd years, 2 seasons in a row. The year we win the NIT in dominating fashion, and a year after we go to the dance.

I guess I put more stock in wins and losses, than some do in timeout entertainment...
Who is writing the check to Sexton?

Whenever I hear Marshall gloat, it's always about the Beggs, rarely about his direct supervisor. I believe your off the mark on your first point.

As Sub stated, who said he was retained? I think it was pretty obvious Marshall was staying here. If his dream job couldn't even lure him, nothing was. And that's because of several factors and I don't believe Mr. Sexton's "sweet talking" was one of them. I'm sure Marshall asked for a few things and like anybody with a 1/4 of a brain, Sexton agreed to them. Not really rocket science.

Your last point is where you really miss the mark and unfortunately a few too many do here as well. Wins and losses go hand and hand with the entire basketball program. Our perception to potential recruits and their families and the media in general goes a long ways in helping lay stakes to big recruits later on down the road. Weber State wins all the time in basketball. Did you even know that? It's more than just wins and losses. And I'm afraid Eric Sexton shares your same view. That's a dangerous viewpoint to have. Sexton just isn't a big time athletic director in my opinion. I think while the wins have increased (thank you Gregg), other areas surrounding the program have taken a hit. If you want a list of examples, I can continue further.

Again, I offered up an innocent comment regarding the situation and must have struck a nerve with a few, as this thread has now driven off to where it is now. If everybody is so secure with Sexton, then why did it strike such a touchy nerve?

              Please do.

You haven't touched a nerve. Simply, many posters are fatigued with your constant criticism of Sexton based on such important things as the vibe he gives you.

Did you not see 3g go up into the stands and personally escort Dr. 7 Mrs. Beggs down through the stands, open the scorer's bench so they could come through and participate in the net cutting? And you believe that 3G would think that Dr.Beggs is leaving, so don't include him in negotiations or listen to what he has to say?

Frankly, I would always prefer to negotiate with the one with the power, but you may choose to do otherwise. More likely, as I mentioned and you didn't read, it was probably a concerted team effort.

furthermore, I never once said that Dr. Beggs negotiated with 3G, only that Dr. Beggs has terrific relationships with very big money sources, both related and no-related directly to athletics. I have no idea where "negoriating your eemployment" (whatever that is) came from.

And your original "more to say", Eric reports to Dr. Beggs,so it is clear where the buck stops. It is Dr. Beggs' choice if he allows Eric to have the final say. He very well may, and I personally believe he does, but the reality is the reality, Dr. Beggs has the authority to run the University and will do so until the later of July 1 or a replacement has been named.

A physician called into a radio show and said:

You mean the thread, 60? The reality at 21st and Hillside seems calm, smooth-running, and satisfactory. But the analysis and speculation on here are definitely farfetched enough for soap material.

do they still do soaps? In today tv it would be a reality TV show, with camera following everybody arouind in the AD and their wives. There would be the usual drama, philanderings (I'm sure Mean Gene would volunteer), and meltdown (e.g. STL) with ES being the calming influence (all for TV).

Haha. I was actually thinking he was turning 67 this year, so I was three years off anyway ;)

You know, he's closer to 50 than 100.

A mild upset? Not sure that's how KSU fans view it.
