        Who woulda thunk it?

In case I'm told that one source isn't enough for how to box out, I went to ehow.com, the leading source on basketball moves.

They say you're supposed to face the basket too.
I'm curious -- have you ever attended an actual D1 practice?

I've seen dozens, including the "open practices" of each of the teams that were in Omaha for the NCAA tourney. Bill Self, Randy Bennett and Matt Painter all teach it differently than you are suggesting.

Never once have I heard coaches instruct players to box out in the way set forth in the little articles you clipped (which are obviously intended as instructional aids for small children considering they indicate that things needed include "athletic socks" and "basketball hoops"). Instead, at actual D1 practices, what you will routinely hear screamed by coaches at rebounding drills are along the lines of "go hit somebody!". Similarly, if you truly have watched a great deal of games and have never seen a player push another player with both hands while getting in position to rebound, I'd assume you are focusing on the flight of the ball rather than the activity of those waiting for the rebound.

As to Zeller in particular, YOUtube is chock full of videos of Zellers antics (most of which have been placed by Duke fans). Here's a couple illustrating his propensity to emote (the second one is a personal favorite):

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Tyler Zeller blatantly flops and fakes an injury at the :01 mark while posting up against Anthony Davis. After flailing and rolling on the ground, Zeller doe...

If you really watched the entire Creighton-UNC game rather than the 11 second clip, you also saw at least four other instances of Zellers flopping. With the amount of flopping we see in the MVC, I'd love to see officials take a hard line about that ****. Ultimately, that would only help schools like WSU and CU.

I watched the entire game. I have attended D-I practices. I have heard coaches yell "put a body on him,' or 'Move him out." I've never heard them say "hit him," though I don't doubt that has been said. I do doubt that a coach wants a player to face away from the basket and shove a player (flopping or not) not already in contact with the rebounder. Coach McD publically stated that Greg E acted inappropriately, whether he privately agrees or not, he knows that it was AGAINST THE RULES.

I have seen players put two hands on the body of an opponent and shove them. I have seen it called a foul. I have seen it missed. In each case, the foul was committed against a player in which boxing out with the body had failed and the push was made when ALREADY IN CONTACT WITH THE OPPONENT. I have NEVER seen a player shoved in open court where the fan said that the play was ACCEPTABLE as has been said on here.

Now I suppose SubGod will retort, "I never said it was acceptable," as will DJA. Both of you stated that it happens all the time and is not called. That is saying that the play is okay.

What about, "Is it dirty?" Yes! The play itself was dirty. When you shove a player that is running, that is as dirty as tripping, whether the player was flopping or not, you can't do that. It is a flagrant or intentional or technical or whatever. It is beyond positioning for an advantage and is done SPECIFICALLY to take a player out of the play. If you push, trip, or otherwise take down a player intentionally, you have committed a dirty play.

I have said repeatedly that I believe it should be called a foul but is not. So if it's not called a foul in the regular season, it shouldn't be called a foul in the postseason. Those who thought he should get a T or something were way off base.

But thank you for playing "putting words in others people mouths" or "failing to read other posts". Which ever one you were participating in. Even DJA said he would have no problem with it being called a foul. It wasn't a dirty play.

And I guess you think ALL hard fouls are dirty? Even though they're an accepted part of the game to prevent the other team from scoring?

I've read all of your posts. It's not an acceptable foul because the he pushed him when not already in contact with the player. Other pushes I've seen, there was already body contact. That's the difference.

We've been over that video before. Not all of them are as bad as the person that submitted the video wanted to make them out to be. I've had plenty of discussions over that video with other officials as well. Some are bad. Some aren't.

It serves no purpose to this thread.

                            • Here's the rule (as obtained from the internet): "A flagrant personal foul (or intentional foul) involves excessive or severe contact during a live ball."

I say the contact was "excessive."

                              • I say it was not.

The flop made it look a million times worse than it really was. Without the flop, nobody is talking about it.
