I'm not on TSF and am planning on trying to attend. Still going to be crap attendance.

Yeah, had a couple great seats offered to me and didn’t even think about taking them. Can’t imagine that a few years ago. I flew in to Wichita from LA a few times to watch the Shockers in the past when I was living out of town.
Brummett throws, STRUCK HIM OUT! THE SHOCKERS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! AN UNBELIEVABLE STORY!

Updated attendance for 2022-23. Removed Intrust since it is neutral game.

I believe those totals for this year are season tickets plus other ticket purchases for any specific game. No way we are averaging over 7,000 "butts in seats" which is at a low since the 90s, maybe, worse.

                    • WSU has always listed attendance as tickets sold. So for a apples to apples comparison tickets sold is an appropriate metric.

I understand, but for discussion purposes, butts in seats is more relevant as I believe that with no change this year, season tickets will drop again. Another problem will be getting fans who were long time season ticketholders who dropped their season tickets convinced to pay what they were for potentially much worse seats.

WSU used to list "butts in seats" for baseball (not sure about basketball). But when Schaus came in as AD, he changed that and they listed tickets sold. I recall Gene said that the NCAA gives you a choice, you can list "butts in seats" or "tickets sold", but whatever one you choose will go as your official attendance -- so for perception purposes you are going to go with the higher number.

                          • I went back and looked at history to see what happens to attendance when different coaches are hired

                            Fogler (-112)
                            Cohen (-2026)
                            Scott T (+1024)
                            Randy S. (+3921)
                            Turgeon (+721)
                            Marshall (0)
Isaac B. (covid, -1600 second year)

                            Data would indicate:

                            1. Don't expect a big increase in attendance unless it is considered a "homerun" hire by the fans
                            2. Expect modest Attendance (700-1100) Increase if there is hope generated by the hire
                            3. The bigger driver in attendance is winning. For every 20% increase in Win%, results in 1,000 tickets sold
                            4. Decrease in attendance under HCIB is larger than Cohen (-3,151) vs IB (-3,198).

                            BTW, Attendance average by coach

                            1. GGG 10,493
                            2. Gene Smithson 9,996

                            8. Scott T 6,566

Gene Smithson is only partial since my data stops at 1980.

Is it fair to say that "attendance" is not "butts in seats" unless actual attendance is greater than season tickets sold?

Good call-out. I find it hard to believe butts in seats were close to the tickets sold. I can imagine a lot of corporate seats were empty.
