  • At great personal risk, here are a few takeaways from last night's contest:

    1. It's amazing how simply moving the ball, doesn't even really matter sometimes where it goes but simply passing the ball elsewhere, works so well in scoring the basketball.
    2. Qua showed a lot of growth last night. I hope that's not a one off because he's needed badly.
    3. I sense a little discouragement from Kenny, I hope I'm wrong because he's really good and has huge upside. I don't want him to hit a freshman wall.
    4. That being said, he needs to play and be more like a 5. That doesn't mean I don't want to see the pick and pop, but he ran down the floor a couple of times and planted his butt deep and it made the defense foul him and it was an easy deuce and it was great and we need more of that, AND he needs to get strong and finish. Just want to see more balance from him, and MORE of everything.. He's too good.
    5. Monzy's effort is great, but he does have to watch the fouling. Gotta find that balance where you learn when and when not to go all out. But he's learning on the right side.
    6. RCIV needs to listen a little more. Too often (not all the time, but too often) he has blinders on to what is going on everywhere but within his own circle.
    7. Ricky, Kenny and yes even Monzy need to get better defensively. These 3 are likely to be singled out and worn out in conference if they don't improve.
    8. Again, passing the ball leads to better everything.
    9. Overall, this is an excellent defensive team.
    10. I know they are now 0-10, but I didn't think they were all that bad. I'm not saying they are good, but I've seen a lot worse SWAC teams over the years. These kids made some plays.
    11. More people attended than I expected, and I thought the crowd was pretty decent all things considered. Kudos also to people finding homes for their tickets. In my section I'm used to seeing the various corporate and regulars, and while yeah, there were plenty of empty seats, I loved seeing a lot of new folks that obviously got tickets from them. Good job and keep it up.
    12. Jenkins has upside, but I'm not seeing the love many are giving, other than the fact we need a PG. He's really lost out there and when the ball isn't on him, he stands a lot.
    13. The team got better last night, but everything starts coming a lot faster now. A good strong start to league play is imperative for this group, imho, and which given the schedule seems like a very tall order. (@ECU, Memphis, @Houston, Tulane, Cincinnati) 2-3 hardly out of the question, and might be even good and that's with 3 home games.
    14. I thought HCIB got his point across the last few days. Good deal and well done Coach!
    15. I thought TE took one bad shot last night. That's beyond impressive, for anyone. Didn't feel like he "pressed" at any time.
    16. Mo and Dex keep doing Mo and Dex things. Not much wrong with that.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone. I hope you all are safe, healthy, happy and able to spend time with the ones you love, including the team and coaches and staff.

I use the LiveStats link from the schedule on goshockers. then I click on the Home Stats tab.

Top teams can be really good because they have a JP type player doing the unsung heroe stuff. Unfortunately, the other pieces on the team are not good enough on offense to allow WSU that luxury. I am still hoping JP can get pas the mental block that is preventing him from making a bigger offensive impact.
I thought JP's lack of explosiveness was holding him back more than any mental block

        • Can we all check ourselves and remember it was PVA&M?

JP would have looked like Paul Miller this game.

Monzy is learning, and has heart. Will be a key piece going forward. He is also a presence off the bench. A spark plug. They are very important to the team.

Qua was back against the level of competition he excels against. Bad defense, open shots, and slow defenders.

This was a game TE should have taken over but he didn’t.

I’m disappointed. We scored a lot of points but didn’t get better.

Who is getting overly enthused about it? It was just nice to see the players get some smiles on their faces before Christmas. It was what it was supposed to be: a blowout win against a bad team who doesn’t play defense.

And, considering the bad taste I had in my mouth after the NT game, this was a refreshing, much needed, encouraging positive result! I'm glad to eat my pessimism.

That works unitl the LiveStats link is replaced with a Box Score link.

I certainly don't think this game proved that we have fixed things in a way that will work against better competition (although I don't think it showed no progress either, just hard to gauge how real the progress was). To your point about Tyson, what did you want from him? Here was his line:

                    20 pts
                    55% from the field
                    50% from 3
                    100% from the line
                    5 assists
                    0 turnovers
                    4 steals
                    4 rebounds

He did all that in less than 25 minutes (compared to the 33+ mpg he usually plays). What more did you want from him?

He's nowhere nearly as talented as Cle. He's athletically as talented but not skill wise. That's not to say he's bad, just that Cle was exceptional. They both suffered from a lack of BBIQ but Gregg had Cle under a much tighter thumb and limited his attempts at mistakes.

Not a bad correlation at all actually. Given the same coach, either way, might be very similar. Just my opinion though.

Always learning, never reaching the goal.

Merry Christmas my friend, to you and all your wonderful family.

                            • I think I got to see what I was hoping to see last night. The Shocks against a team that has very few assists and everyone looking to shoot. Mo started a little slow but built MO mentum as the game progressed until his spectacular display of 4 fouls in what about two minutes. Some nice passing and less individual dribbling. Monzy really looks good at going after rebounds. I don't think I would like to try and take it away from him. Plays like a possessed energizer bunny. RCIV seemed to take a step back last night. Was shut out until he got fouled a couple of times and converted his free throws. Hunted his shot out of frustration several times in a row and was taken out by HCIB even thought there were only 8 bodies available. I was worried a little about a defensive lapse in what appeared to be a score fest for the Shocks entering the game but the guys played aggressively and well. I think the post game stats said we had 20 assists last night. That tells me we were passing the ball and actually someone was making the shot after receiving the ball for a much needed change. Hope the team and coaches all have a good time with loved ones and return locked in for the start of the conference. Go Shocks
