At great personal risk, here are a few takeaways from last night's contest:
1. It's amazing how simply moving the ball, doesn't even really matter sometimes where it goes but simply passing the ball elsewhere, works so well in scoring the basketball.
2. Qua showed a lot of growth last night. I hope that's not a one off because he's needed badly.
3. I sense a little discouragement from Kenny, I hope I'm wrong because he's really good and has huge upside. I don't want him to hit a freshman wall.
4. That being said, he needs to play and be more like a 5. That doesn't mean I don't want to see the pick and pop, but he ran down the floor a couple of times and planted his butt deep and it made the defense foul him and it was an easy deuce and it was great and we need more of that, AND he needs to get strong and finish. Just want to see more balance from him, and MORE of everything.. He's too good.
5. Monzy's effort is great, but he does have to watch the fouling. Gotta find that balance where you learn when and when not to go all out. But he's learning on the right side.
6. RCIV needs to listen a little more. Too often (not all the time, but too often) he has blinders on to what is going on everywhere but within his own circle.
7. Ricky, Kenny and yes even Monzy need to get better defensively. These 3 are likely to be singled out and worn out in conference if they don't improve.
8. Again, passing the ball leads to better everything.
9. Overall, this is an excellent defensive team.
10. I know they are now 0-10, but I didn't think they were all that bad. I'm not saying they are good, but I've seen a lot worse SWAC teams over the years. These kids made some plays.
11. More people attended than I expected, and I thought the crowd was pretty decent all things considered. Kudos also to people finding homes for their tickets. In my section I'm used to seeing the various corporate and regulars, and while yeah, there were plenty of empty seats, I loved seeing a lot of new folks that obviously got tickets from them. Good job and keep it up.
12. Jenkins has upside, but I'm not seeing the love many are giving, other than the fact we need a PG. He's really lost out there and when the ball isn't on him, he stands a lot.
13. The team got better last night, but everything starts coming a lot faster now. A good strong start to league play is imperative for this group, imho, and which given the schedule seems like a very tall order. (@ECU, Memphis, @Houston, Tulane, Cincinnati) 2-3 hardly out of the question, and might be even good and that's with 3 home games.
14. I thought HCIB got his point across the last few days. Good deal and well done Coach!
15. I thought TE took one bad shot last night. That's beyond impressive, for anyone. Didn't feel like he "pressed" at any time.
16. Mo and Dex keep doing Mo and Dex things. Not much wrong with that.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone. I hope you all are safe, healthy, happy and able to spend time with the ones you love, including the team and coaches and staff.
