Coaches Show - 1/30/12

So, let's say that I've noticed how our last possessions of a half, either after a timeout or a play called in from the bench, always look like one guy dribbling in place, then going one-on-one with 8 seconds left. I want to call in to the coach's show and ask whether or not that is by design or if I'm missing something. How do I ask without it coming across as questioning the coach?

I don't catch a lot of the Monday night shows, but it seems like Marshall takes these questions far too personally when he could just answer the question honestly and leave the motivation of the caller out of it. The assistants do a much better job with these types of questions on the lockerroom shows, IMO.

How about, "In these situations, what is your philosophy of having one player dribbling near midcourt until the clock is near 8 seconds?"

I wasn't able to think too much about it at the time because of the game, but that now that I do, that really pisses me off.

No, I'm not challenging his coaching decisions. I'm asking him to clarify to those who aren't on the team what they were asked to do, what was supposed to happen. To me, asking "how many practices have you attended" is a cop out, and an antagonistic one at that. He can be more diplomatic.

I would hate to listen to one of his shows if we suffer an obviously underachieving year.

I love Marshall and hope he stays at WSU until they have to carry him out. He's the best coach here in a loooong time. But there's no question, he IS thin-skinned and chippy. It's too bad, too, because, ego or not, he doesn't have to be that way. I know from personal experience that it's possible to ask our baseball board's nemesis Gene Stephenson why he did something in a particular situation without getting the antagonistic attitude; I've done it several times over the years, and Gene's answers have always been civil, thoughtful, and serious; they've also always made it apparent how far ahead of me he is in thinking about game situations -- not because of any disparagement, sarcasm, or condescension from him, but simply because his explanation of what he had in mind made it clear that he had thought of everything I had, and more. And that's from a guy who has enjoyed far more success than Marshall has (which doesn't reflect badly of Marshall's achievements; it just highlights the magnitude of what Gene has done).

So Marshall could, and should, lighten up and rise above the know-it-all bozos and their idiot questions, and thus avoid discouraging the good faith inquiries of folks like Royal. Afer all, not every question why a coach made a particular decision is a second-guess -- and, by the way, I hate hate hate hindsight, so I'm very sensitive to recognizing it when it's there -- sometimes we just want to know why he did what he did when he made a call that to the untrained eye seems surprising. Besides, part of his job is PR, isn't it?

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean he will be gracious, but hope springs eternal among us Sunshine Gang members. Good luck, Royal.

He can be as chippy as he wants. He's a great coach. I always enjoy listening to him.

...and people are not all the same; they will not react the same in given situations. Just live Fever, KC, (just to name a couple of us) and others have their attitudes and ideas on this board, Coach has his own attitude too. People are different, and they aren't going to be our puppets and act just the way we want them to...that would be pretty boring anyway.

As I said, trop, I want Marshall here forever, and his occasional obnoxiousness is a price I'm happily willing to pay (just as KU fans were happy to live with the thin-skinned St. Roy, at least until he jilted them). But it's still unnecessarily obnoxious.

His chipiness is really being honest as to how he feels. I know I enjoy his honesty in discussing things rather than giving the old coach-speak that many coaches do. I gladly put up with a bit of sarcasm to get the true feelings about players and their ups and downs.

That is part of the problem. We want him to talk honestly, but when he does he is then seen to be "throwing people under the bus" because we are suprised to see him actually giving his true feelings even though we know what he is saying is true.

It is almost like as fans were so insecure that we want to call in and tell our coach our fears and have him reassure us "everything will be all right".

Love Coach, and if you are going to call in with some weak @$$ comments, expect them to come right back at you like you were driving the lanne against Orukpe.

The fact that Coach is candid it something I've always appreciated. If he is willing to provide us with far more insight than most coaches, I'm happy to allow him to show his feelings to the fans as well as about the players, etc.
