I always wondered why there was not an assistant up in the rafters, like they do in football.

We sit in what my chess master buddy used to call the "see all" position -- under no stress with instant replay and slow motion. Its a very different "angle" when you are sitting at the table, facing an opponent, with a clock winding down, and you are trying to focus on both the opponents strategy and develop your own pieces.
While I do get your point, it's what they signed up for. I will give HCGM a pass on how he handled the called on Monday, but it was poor judgement on his part...just like when he threw D-Will under the bus for not making the post pass vs. Drake. Can't have it both ways coach.

I didn't even listen, I was just chiming in on what others were discussing on here.

Yeah, there are always those out there that know better. And yes, being in their position, they get to listen to it. There's no stopping it, but it doesn't mean it's good policy to do it. Kinda like marijuana.

Maybe he signed up for it but if you read Shockernet, there are as many opinions on why we lost and what went wrong as there are posters. Everyone has an opinion and it's easy to see that Kyles missed a lot of shots but to say why our offense didn't work, to argue personnel when you haven't been to practice, to argue when to call a timeout is rediculous because you don't agree with me, and I don't agree with another poster, etc. So, its best to word any question to coach so that one gets the same information without calling him out for his coaching decisions. He makes probably hundreds or thousands of coaching decisions each game. Word your question respectfully and you'll probably find out what he's thinking. Now you may be like the media sometimes and if you're asking "gotcha" questions, your going to get a little attitude(see Gingrich, etc. during the debate).

So, let's say that I've noticed how our last possessions of a half, either after a timeout or a play called in from the bench, always look like one guy dribbling in place, then going one-on-one with 8 seconds left. I want to call in to the coach's show and ask whether or not that is by design or if I'm missing something. How do I ask without it coming across as questioning the coach?

I don't catch a lot of the Monday night shows, but it seems like Marshall takes these questions far too personally when he could just answer the question honestly and leave the motivation of the caller out of it. The assistants do a much better job with these types of questions on the lockerroom shows, IMO.

Too many callers come off as being critical. They don't call to ask the strategy involved or what play did we run...they come off as "why did you do that?" "You should have done this." Any human being, in that situation, will become defensive. Especially when you are being paid because you know what you are doing, only to be criticized by a caller that is giving the impression that he knows more than you do. Have somebody come to your job (or on the radio) tell you how you should be doing your job, when you are the professional.

Not saying coach couldn't handle it better, but some people that call in need some people skills also. There are ways to talk without putting somebody down - especially when he is your coach, and you have a program in better shape than it has been for years.

You are asking: "How can I challenge the coach without coming across as challenging the coach?". Is it really helpful or useful? Are you trying to educate an already frustrated person after a tough loss? Or just trying to show the world how smart you are?

In my opinion if you want to challenge a coach then be forthcoming about it. But why do it in the first place? All your gonna do is piss him off and discourage further legitimate questions from being fielded. If you really want to know what the play is in those situations, then just straight up ask him that. If you want to give a coach advice, then be prepared to take an asswhoopin'.

                    I dunno.

                    • Coach has a huge ego, as most coaches at his level do. That is an explaination for his refusal to make in-game adjustments as well as his bristling up at callers.

Don't know all of the particulars of that question but I think that it could be asked similarly to how you phrased it educating you and not questioning coaching decisions. In fact, I think that questions similar to that have been asked.

No, I'm not challenging his coaching decisions. I'm asking him to clarify to those who aren't on the team what they were asked to do, what was supposed to happen. To me, asking "how many practices have you attended" is a cop out, and an antagonistic one at that. He can be more diplomatic.

I would hate to listen to one of his shows if we suffer an obviously underachieving year.

Royal You're free to call in. I just think that some people who think that they know who should play (when they only judging from 1-2 games a week are morons.

                              • Hopefully we'll consider underachieving something less than 25 wins. Actually, I believe Gregg's attitude has turned some people off in the the past. That's why some schools may have shyed away. Just know that's what you got and don't take it personally. I'll still take him.
