      2. Mid-major
      3. Quasi-major
      4. BCS

We are a mid-major. We are AS GOOD as a quasi-major, but we don't have the accomplishments to back it up (top-25 and NCAA tournament appearances). Teams like UNLV, San Diego State and Gonzaga are quasi-major. I love the term "quasi-major" because those teams get huge national respect and it only takes ONE year to earn the title and about three or four years to fall back to "mid-major." Creighton, with just this one season, has become a quasi-major program. San Diego State did it last year, before which they were mid-major at best. Butler, on the other hand, is having a subpar year, yet still gets attention and respect from national media. Wichita State is on the verge of becoming quasi-major.

BCS is the only misleading title. Wake Forrest (or any lackluster program in a BCS conference) is perceived, generally, to be better than Wichita State (or any mid-major). Now, that's very untrue, but it's just the way it is. We hate it, but there's nothing Wichita State can do about it until we step in as a quasi-major. We just need a year that we are ranked for more than 3/4 of the season and get a seed above 7 in the tournament. The future is bright, people!
But in fact, the term Bowl Championship Series is used in reference to ALL teams within the big six conferences, (Big-10, Pac-12, Big-12, Big East, ACC, SEC), not just particular teams from within the big six conferences. As an example; Iowa State, no matter how bad they may be in basketball, football or any other sport, is a BCS program, because they play in a BCS conference. If you are going to lump BCS in with the levels of Quasi-Major, Mid-Major, and Low-Major, then those levels should, just as with BCS, apply not to individual teams, but to conferences, and ALL teams within that conference. That explains why teams from the A-10, MWC, and C-USA, are not included in many Mid-Major rankings. No matter how bad a team from those conferences may be, they are not considered Mid-Major simply because they are in a conference that is not considered Mid-Major. Which leads me to ask, how does a conference move up from Mid-Major to Quasi-Major?
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.
