I think the way schools position themselves is interesting.. WSU's relationship with the MVC doesn't seem to be very good at times. I mean, obviously WSU chooses to stay in the MVC for it's own reasons, but as far as basketball, baseball and bowling standing out over the years, the only other school in the MVC that even comes close to comparing to WSU as far as athletics goes is Creighton. Yet, the MVC seemingly adores Creighton. And as I mentioned in a previous thread, I ran into another MVC athletic director last week and the WSU football situation came up. His take on that whole situation was interesting. Basically he said, "That plane crash was tragic and WSU football never really bounced back from it at all. Even though WSU tried to bring football back after that, it was really never back.".. Even in the athletic departments darkest days in the 90's, baseball was still standing out. This is why when someone like Dikie V. calls WSU a mid-major, it's almost seems like a joke. WSU may be in a non-BCS conference, but their attitude in athletics is to hang with the big boys.

How did you get to Shocker Football and Bowling from a thread about a Dickie V, Q&A?

He said people "around here" just don't understand ACC level talent. Whew.. what a croc. That may be why he returned four of five starters from a sweet sixteen team and then finished 6th in the MVC the next year.. he didn't seem to fully understand the strength of the Valley. 'Probaby still does even less now.

When Turgeon left, we all felt like jilted lovers. He brought us back from despair to the dance and our sweet 16. After the dance MT had many suitors, but he turned them down to stay with us. The next year, when it looked like we were destined to have a long relationship and lots of dances, he allowed the team to implode and bolted. Many players left with him and it was like splitting up friends after a divorce. Then, as we morn, grow and mature, you start to look back at the "at this level" comments and you realize that he never wanted us. He was just using WSU to get the attention of the sweetheart BCS.

            Such is life.

Back to the thread topic: DV didn't have to mention WSU as a possible deep run team this year. He inserted us as an alternative to the common knowledge teams! That says a lot about where we reside with Dickie! Glad to see it!

If we are a mid major than so is nebraska, iowa state, clemson and a host of other bs teams. There is no difference between our program and theirs...with the exception that ours is better.
The mid major term is only used to imply that our program doesn't measure up with major programs when in fact our program more than measures up in most cases.

And there lies the problem at it's ethos. It doesn't matter how much financial support, fan support, high level of play, record, or a number of other factors that classify a team a mid-major. It all depends on the conference they play in. That is why the term mid-major is so offensive to schools like ours. If they want to classify teams and put a title on it, it needs to be "non-bcs conference" not "mid-major."

I just can't believe we actually have fans that buy into the legitimacy of the term and our inclusion into that category.

To me, it's like admitting that you are a weak, sub-standard person that has no business competing in the big leagues. Let's just forfeit every game because we just not as good. Geesh.

I don't like the term mid-major, but I don't get my panties in a wad over that sort of thing.

I am personally delighted the way 3G defined our status during his interview. He said, "We are a first class high major BB program that does not play football."

Pure and simple. Let's stop the blasted bickering of I don't like this and I don't like that. Our coach defined it perfectly. We don't need to search any further.

I thank Mark for taking us out of the dark ages, but the way he left and the taking of recruits that WSU PAID FOR the recruitment of really pissed me off! That is where the turd comment came from.

Recruit, singular. I'd trade 10 guys that never suited up for us for what Turgeon has done for us. The 90s were that bad. Without Turgeon, no Marshall. That simple. He upgraded from us (in his mind) and we upgraded from him. It all worked out very nicely.

As much as I dislike the Bowles thing, I don't believe he "took" him from WSU. It was pretty much felt that he may not have come to WSU even if MT stayed as friends were in Bowles' ear to look for a BCS home. When MT left, Bowles renewed his interest in MT the BCS coach. MT's mistake was in accepting him.

We also lost MT's other freshman recruit who stayed back east.
