  • Memphis coach Penny Hardaway blasts G League for recruiting tactics that are 'almost like tampering' - CBS Sports

"The Memphis coach wants the NCAA to look into the G League suddenly aggressively signing players

Memphis could have two players from its No. 1 ranked 2019 recruiting class selected in the first round of this year's NBA Draft. But Tigers coach Penny Hardaway is battling an unprecedented new foe as he seeks to replicate that recruiting success.

It's the new NBA G League program designed to prepare top high school prospects for the NBA. Hardaway said Friday that the G League's methods for recruiting players feel "almost like tampering" and called on the NCAA to take "some more desperate measures" to show top prospects they are wanted in college basketball.

"It will affect how we recruit if the NCAA doesn't do something about it, if they don't keep taking steps forward to help these kids make money," Hardaway said in a video interview released by the Memphis athletic department. "They're going to take $300,000, $400,000, $500,000 (in the G League program) for five months to play on a select team and just do basketball instead of having to go to class."..."

    • Penny upset he lost a couple of recruiting battles. The G League had to raise their legal payments to offset the Memphis', KU's, LSU's, Arizona's of the world and their rule breaking payments to top players.

Wow, where do I even start with this. Him complaining about anyone having an "unfair" or "tampering" methodological approach in recruiting is outright laughable. What desperate measures would he like taken? Pay them $300,000, $400,000, or $500,000 and not make them go to class? Affect how they recruit? What he means here is that they would have to pay the families and boosters more money to get recruits.

"They're going to take $300,000, $400,000, $500,000 (in the G League program) for five months to play on a select team and just do basketball instead of having to go to class."..." - Is this different that what they will be doing at Memphis? Serious question.

Dude knows he can’t win if he actually has to develop any players.

              Exactly my first thought.

              • I have to wonder if Lomax has regrets. He will be a junior now and no significant distinction whereas the door was wide open for him to take the reigns at PG for 3 and a half years.

I guess my question would be how is this different now than baseball? Kid has a choice. Good for them. Some will and should take the G league route. Some will wish or will go to college and hopefully get a degree and play professionally. I am totally against pay to play, but that’s me. For me, just put in the baseball rules. You can get drafted, if you don’t sign you play college for three years, or go to juco. The system works.

                    • $500K is peanuts for the NBA to nab the top few high school prospects each year. Penny just needs to stop recruiting Top 10 kids focus on the Top 200 along with collegiate development.

Penny has to have top ten talent to struggle to 20 wins. I’m gonna laugh when he posts another 21 win, 5th place AAC season.

What are you going to do when he doesn't achieve that next season? If he loses 2 players to the draft and isn't getting the top recruits he went after this year, he may not have a team that's competitive at the upper levels of the AAC.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I’ll drink a bourbon with smug satisfaction in the (once again) reaffirmed truth that talent can’t cover up bad coaching, toast HCGM and UK HCJC, and probably troll some tiger fans on csnbbs. It’ll be a good time of good fellowship with Cold, Fever, and the other realists on that site.

                            • It’s no coincidence that Penny’s best team was the 2 and 3 star senior laden team recruited and developed by Tubby.
