I think KU lost to Davidson because the team adopted their fans' attitude - basically, all KU has to do is show up to beat a team like Davidson, VCU, UNI, etc.

If a KU coach ever scheduled WSU and lost, that same fan arrogance could cost him his job. KU fans would tar and feather the coach for scheduling the game. Then they'd call for his scalp for being so incompetent at his job that he could take all that superior talent and lose to a WSU team that has no business being in the same state with KU, let alone play on the same court.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

The game with Davidson was at Sprint so it's not a money issue.

It's 100% a fear issue, it just depends on how you want to define it. Being in a "no-win" situation is a fear of losing. I don't think I've ever heard the $ excuse before, not sure how you even explain that one.

Several of us on this board rightly expressed frustration with what happened to our RPI after we played (and systematically dismantled) Chicago State. It really was horrific that our RPI dropped by half after that game. There seems to be a consensus that playing Newman was a great idea because it didn't hurt our RPI, and that scheduling Chicago State again shuouldn't be any resort let alone a last resort. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at least the stated reason that KU refuses to play WSU is that KU is concerned that even in the unlikely event they won, their RPI would drop. Does anyone see the irony here? Granted, the latest update I see is KU's RPI is 32 and we're 46, so it's a small difference, but in the past there were strings of years when that has been much greater. I'm not trying to compare ourselves with Chicago State, or any other self-effacing analogy, I'm just asking a question to make sure our arguments have a leg to stand on. There's SO MANY things we can criticize KU for, I would just like this one to make sense to me.

          Go easy on me. Thanks!
KU needs not to be concerned about rpi. Rpi is not designed for them. Its designed for the selection committee to judge the mid majors and decide if they belong in the dance. KU does not want to take the chance that they lose and everyone figures out that ku can't back up their boasts. That's all.

Agreed. I don't give two ***** if WSU plays KU. But to the point of RPI...

RPI is not the reason KU will not play WSU and here is why:

            1) KU has no problem playing teams equal to or less than WSU in regards to RPI(Florida Atlantic 142, South Florida 160, USC 147)
            2) see #1

Back to the original thread, is wavingthewheat the KU message board for JOCO high students, or is it where posters from Phog.net go when they get run?

WtW is a JOCO board with about 20 posters on it at any given time. Unfortunately, JoCo has nearly infected KU with a provincial outlook. I'm not sure of the stats, but I believe that the percentage trend of statewide students at KU has grown to reflect an overwhelming flavor of Johnson County. This is due in part to JoCo's growth, but also due to KU's lack of focus on areas outside of the KC metro area.
KU needs to take a page out of KSU playbook on how to market their program in Wichita, or the coat that KU wears in order to allow KSU to hang onto will no longer fit the Jayhawks. KU needs to wake up. Losing to Davidson is a joke, except for the fact that it shouldn't be funny.

Ku won't play the shocks for one simple reason, after the battle of new orleans and a football game shortly afterward t-shirts were made comemmorating the games. This
infuriated the jayhawk faithful and is the real reason they won't play. All the other reasons you hear are ku fan trying not to seem petty and afraid of being embarrassed again
on the admittably rare occurance that they lose. The t-shirt idea was funny at the time, but in retrospect I think it has cost us alot of fun over the years. Both schools and fan
bases are to blame, ku for being petty and butthurt, wsu for whooping it up on them a little too much after the big wins. At this point if ku will have us up to lawrence every
year to play, I say we play, wtf it would be fun and just think how embarrassing it would be for them to lose in the old barn!

I don't think you can blame the lack of playing on the t-shirts and billboards. The Shockers and Jayhawks weren't even playing in baseball at that time.

AFTER the t-shirts and billboards, the Shockers and Jayhawks did START playing regularly in basketball for awhile AND in baseball. The baseball series continues to this day.

If the t-shirts and billboards bothered them so much, they wouldn't have started a regular series in basketball in the mid to late 80s and they wouldn't have started playing us in baseball. The t-shirts should have stuck in their crawl a lot more then than it would now a generation and a half later.

The t-shirts and billboards probably wouldn't have even happened if the Jayhawks hadn't refused to play the Shockers for 26 years.

When you only play once every 26 years (and even then it was forced on them because it was in the ncaa tournament) you open yourself up to that kind of ribbing if you lose.

I think what you have to consider is that while we here in Wichita care about baseball, they don't and pay no attention whatsoever, it's like track and field to them, secondly I think
after they agreed to play in the Brown-Fogler era there was a backlash on the ku side after the deal was done and it wasn't renewed. There are alot of pompous arrogant ku fans
in Wichita and they don't do very well with the "in your face" stuff.

Right on. Got it, not an RPI issue. More of a pride issue, or politics, so not a real valid reason. You know it being a $$ issue has to be furthest from the truth--you know if they'll play Davidson at Sprint they'd play us there. A Sprint-Intrust series would make sense to me. A pipe dream, yes, but makes sense nonetheless.

Thats why KU plays Davidson and Long Beach State, so they don't have to be in a no win situation.....
KU likes to set up an Always Win situation. Don't tell me from a fan standpoint it's no win for KU fan. Most of them would love to shut Shocker fan up. They are just walking the KU official BS line.
