"Memphis basketball is facing high expectations this season. How will Penny Hardaway’s core of sensational freshmen attempt to live up to the hype?

Memphis basketball looks poised for a major resurgence during this coming season. Even though the Tigers have been quite solid over the last few years, they have not been as nationally prevalent as they had been in the past. Head coach Penny Hardaway, who is entering his second full season with the program, is looking to change that very quickly. There is a tremendous buzz surrounding the Tigers right now and that is due to their elite-level recruiting. Coach Hardaway is bringing in the No. 1 overall recruiting class in the country for this year. With seven commits all ranked in the top-115, including the best player in the class, it is easy to see why fans and experts are so excited about this team. While Memphis is bound to be quite young and inexperienced as a result of this huge class, the team will also be among the most talented in the nation....

    Projected Starting Lineup
    Damion Baugh | G | 6-foot-3 | 180 lbs | Freshman...
    Boogie Ellis | G | 6-foot-3 | 165 lbs | Freshman...
    DJ Jeffries | F | 6-foot-7 | 225 lbs | Freshman...
    Precious Achiuwa | F | 6-foot-9 | 225 lbs | Freshman...
    James Wiseman | C | 7-foot-1 | 240 lbs | Freshman...

    Key Reserves
    Tyler Harris | G | 5-foot-9 | 150 lbs | Sophomore...
    Alex Lomax | G | 6-foot-0 | 190 lbs | Sophomore...
    Isaiah Maurice | F | 6-foot-10 | 224 lbs | Senior...
    Malcolm Dandridge | F | 6-foot-9 | 250 lbs | Freshman
    Lance Thomas | F | 6-foot-9 | 224 lbs | Sophomore...

    Schedule Breakdown
Memphis’ non-conference schedule is not the most difficult in the country but there are definitely some challenging games. There are some “cupcakes”, but it is important to mention that this team might need some time to gel this season. They can use some lower-level games to gain that fluidity and trust. Of course, the Tigers have already competed together on their offseason trip to the Bahamas, but many of their rotation players had to sit out that tour of contests.

Here are the top battles on Memphis’ non-conference slate:

Oregon vs. Memphis on Nov. 12 in Portland
Ole Miss at Memphis on Nov. 23
NC State vs. Memphis on Nov. 28 in Brooklyn
Memphis at UAB on Dec. 7
Memphis at Tennessee on Dec. 14
Georgia at Memphis on Jan. 4

With regards to conference play, Memphis should be the overwhelming favorite in the AAC. While the league will boast a few solid teams capable of reaching the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers will be vastly superior to all in the talent department. As a result, Memphis should dominate for the majority of league play while bolstering their national ranking and potential Big Dance seed.

Houston, Cincinnati, and Wichita State seem likely to be the biggest threats to the Tigers in the conference. Memphis will play each team in the conference twice except for Temple (H), ECU (H), Tulsa (A), and UCF (A).

    Season Outlook
It is no secret that Memphis is one of the most talented teams in the country. Their freshman class is absolutely astounding and should immediately take the nation by storm. They should make headlines throughout the entire year while soaring up the top-25 rankings. With that said, though, they are unproven across the board. In addition to having just a second-year head coach, underclassmen will make up almost the entire rotation....

Memphis should be one of the most fun teams to watch in the country. They are young, full of talent, will play at a fast pace, and have the ability to dominate on both ends of the floor. There will be an abundance of NBA scouts at every single game and they have a few exciting non-conference matchups that will draw plenty of national attention.

Memphis is back as a national title contender.

In the end, the Tigers should be right near the top of everyone’s list of “must-watch” teams. Coach Hardaway is well-liked across the nation and Memphis has emerged as a program capable of competing with Kentucky and Duke on the recruiting trail."
Yeap.!!!!!! I think the shockers just need to acknowledge the greatness of Memphis and bow down to their superiority. If we do that we will feel better about ourselves and avoid disappointment. They have a lot of McDonald All Americans on their team. Memphis with all those freshmen are a national contender. We must accept that we don't have a team now since we lost McDuffie. They will probably come into Koch Arena and dominate the shocks . I am so sad that our program has declined since Baker and Vanvleet have left.

Let's avoid all this stress and just give the conference championship to Memphis.

Memphis will be good. They have skilled, athletic forwards with height and they will catch most of the media attention in the AAC this year. All of that is true and it says nothing about WSU.

The college basketball season is right around the corner. Here is a look at the 10 teams with the toughest non-conference schedules in NCAA Basketball.

"The non-conference half of the NCAA Basketball season can be more important than conference play. Which teams have the most daunting early-season set of opponents? As a die-hard fan of NCAA basketball, my excitement for the sport is not just expressed in March. In fact, part of the reason I pay close attention to the college basketball season from beginning to end is that many of the non-conference games of November and December have an NCAA Tournament feel....

So, let’s now talk about these teams that are pushing themselves to the limit early on this season. Of these 10 teams with the toughest non-conference schedules, some will play in the NCAA Tournament, and others will not be. Nonetheless, they are all doing the right thing by not taking the easy way out. Now, let’s get on to the top 10 toughest non-conference schedules in America. Best of luck to these teams.

Houston Basketball: Preview of Cougars 2019-20 season - FanSided Sports

After a trip to the Elite Eight last season, Houston Basketball looks to continue the momentum as a program. Will they be an NCAA Tournament team again?

"After a trip to the Sweet Sixteen last season, Houston Basketball looks to continue the momentum as a program. Will they be an NCAA Tournament team once again?

Houston Basketball felt that they were contenders last year but saw their dreams fall short following a Sweet 16 loss to Calipari’s Kentucky. Houston still had a great season finishing 33-4 and winning the AAC Regular Season but Kelvin Sampson and crew weren’t satisfied. Unfortunately for them Corey Davis and Armoni Brooks have moved on leaving Houston to rely on some of their youth to help carry the team this season.

A foreign tour this summer couldn’t have come at a better time for a program that saw both of their main offensive threats leave for the NBA. Transfer Quentin Grimes made headlines this summer by transferring from Kansas but the star guard will not be eligible for this season. If his performance on the summer tour was a preview of what Cougars fans can expect, they have to be ecstatic. The summer tour allowed a lot of different guys to get minutes and surely gave Kelvin Sampson a big advantage in seeing what exactly he has to work with....

          Projected Starting Five
Nate Hinton - After earning a spot on the AAC All-Freshman team last season, Nate Hinton is actually the teams leading returning scorer at 7.2 points per game....

Dejon Jarreau - A potential break out player for this season, there’s a lot of hype surrounding Dejon Jarreau....

Cedric Alley - found himself starting about half of the games for Houston last year. He has the ability to stretch the floor by knocking down the three-ball which is something Kelvin Sampson should be looking to take advantage of....

Fabian White - had himself a really good summer tour and is another player looking to have a breakout year for Houston....

Brison Gresham - will be patrolling the paint this year. He plays his game down low and shot an impressive 70% from the floor last season....

          Key Reserves
Caleb Mills - joined Houston last season in January but sat out for a redshirt year. Mills got an opportunity to practice and is ahead of the game compared to other Houston freshman...

Chris Harris - may find himself starting in a few games this year due to his size, he’ll be used to help clog up the paint....

Justin Gorham - is a transfer from Towson who averaged just under 10 points and 7 rebounds mainly coming off the bench....

          Key Non-Conference Games
          Nov 15th BYU...
          Nov 22nd @ Oregon...
          Dec 8th @ South Carolina...
          Dec 15th Oklahoma State...
Diamond Head Classic - December 22nd-25th. They’ll open against Portland and then play either Georgia Tech or Boise State in the second round. UTEP, Washington, Ball State, and Hawai’i make up the other half of the tournament bracket....

          AAC Outlook
Memphis are the team everyone seems to be picking to win the American Athletic Conference this season after one of the most impressive recruiting classes of all time. The number one player in the country James Wiseman is primed to tear this conference up and will be a matchup nightmare for every team. Quite a few talented freshman and returners make the Tigers dangerous. It looks to be a three-horse race with Memphis, Houston, and Cincinnati....

Other teams that could be a challenge in the AAC, South Florida. The Bulls have a very intriguing squad with three really good returners including Alexis Yetna, Brian Gregory and company should not be taken lightly. As always Wichita State is going to prove to be a difficult team to deal with and are likely to fly under the radar. A lot of unanswered questions with Wichita as their top two scorers have graduated but Greg Marshall is one of the best coaches in this conference and will have his team ready.

          Season Outlook
Kelvin Sampson has done a really good job in filling the voids that were left by Armani Brooks and Corey Davis Jr. His ability to develop young talent will play a big role in the success that this Houston team has. Young guys like Nate Hinton, Caleb Mills, and Cedrick Alley Jr are going to have to step up and be bigger contributors for Houston....

If they fail to win the conference championship Houston should still find themselves in a position for an at large bid. Kelvin Sampson will have his guys ready for the challenges and should be a tournament team for the third consecutive season."

            4. South Florida...

            6. UConn...
            7. Wichita State
Key Returners - Dexter Dennis, Jamarius Burton, Jaime Echenique, Morris Udeze, Asbjorn Midtggard,
Key Additions - Trey Wade, Tyson Etienne, Grant Sherfield, Noah Fernandes
Expectations - Gregg Marshall needs to be able to maximize his roster with a lack of experience. Dexter Dennis will need to develop further into a more consistent threat to score on the perimeter. Also, Jaime Echenique and Asbjorn Midtgaard have an opportunity to be a frontcourt that has solid potential. Jamarius Burton will be a major factor in the backcourt with his ability to score and distribute. The youth on this team must develop quickly in order for Wichita State to maximize their potential. Further, they will be a borderline NCAA tournament team or more likely NIT team.
            8. UCF...
            9. SMU...
            10. East Carolina...

"Memphis may start five freshmen this season and you probably don't realize how rare that is" - CBS Sports

                by: Gary Parrish

                https://www.cbssports.com/college-ba...-rare-that-is/

"The Tigers will join select company if, as expected, they rely on five freshmen in their lineup.

On the eve of the start of official practices, in a small room here just inside the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center, Memphis coach Penny Hardaway met with the media this week and discussed for what wasn't the millionth time, but sure felt like it, the possibility of starting five freshmen.

"If five freshmen earn those spots, I would have no problem with it," Hardaway said. "It's just [going to come down to] who is going to be the best at that position for us to win. ... They're going to battle it out in practice. And if it's five freshmen [who end of starting], I don't have a problem with that."...

Memphis will probably start all freshmen.

It's a rare thing in college basketball.

Everybody obviously remembers Michigan's Fab Five and also knows that Kentucky and Duke, in recent years, have been heavily reliant on freshmen. But do you know how many high-major teams have actually predominantly started five freshmen in a season?

                Three.

                They are:

                1991-92 Michigan
                2013-14 Kentucky
                2017-18 Kentucky
                That's it. Just three....

The history of starting five freshmen is interesting.

The three teams that have done it combined to go just 33-21 in conference games. None of them won their league. None of them earned better than a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. So the idea that things went smoothly from start to finish isn't accurate. But all three did advance to the Sweet 16. And two of them -- 1991-92 Michigan and 2013-14 Kentucky -- actually made it all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament."...

A second-year coach enrolled the top-ranked recruiting class and has multiple players projected to go in the lottery of the 2020 NBA Draft, according to CBS Sports Prospect Rankings. If things go well, it'll be among the biggest stories in the sport. And if they don't, well, it might be even bigger."

UConn men’s basketball: Hurley and Vital on the same page entering new season - SB Nation

                  By Daniel Connolly@DanielVConnolly
                  Oct 1, 2019, 8:35am EDT

"Also, Hurley explains how he’s using a photo to motivate his team and why he’s not thrilled with a part of the non-conference schedule.

In Dan Hurley’s first season at UConn, he and guard Christian Vital didn’t exactly have the best relationship. Hurley expressed displeasure with Vital’s defense after a buzzer-beater loss to Wichita State and also took him out of the starting lineup at one point. In their second year together, the pair has put a lot of time into working through whatever issues they had in the past....

                  Chasing a championship
UConn is preparing to play its final year in the AAC and over the six years of the conference’s existence, the Huskies have never won the regular season championship. In fact, they’ve never finished higher than where they’ve been picked in the preseason poll.

But none of that matters to Hurley. He intends to go out with a bang. A photo of the AAC championship trophy has been following the team around everywhere they go...."

I think the always popular "Participation Ribbon" would be best for UConn this season.

How Penny Hardaway put Memphis back on the map -- a timeline - ESPN

                    posted: 10/02/19, 6:00am cst

In a frenzied 14-month period, Memphis coach Penny Hardaway returned the Tigers to the national picture. These were the steps in the program's evolution.

"On the day in March 2018 when Memphis made the decision to fire coach Tubby Smith, it had been four years since Memphis won an NCAA tournament game, and three-and-a-half since it had landed an ESPN 100 prospect. Eighteen months later, Memphis is the most buzzed-about team in college basketball entering the 2019-20 season. These are the steps that led to the Tigers becoming one of the most feared programs on the recruiting trail and soon, perhaps, on the court:

Stage I: Penny hires a staff, targets a phenom
It hadn't been much of a secret over the final few weeks of the season, but when Memphis parted ways with Tubby Smith, it was only a matter of time before the Tigers made their replacement pick official. Hardaway grew up in Memphis, played for the Tigers and returned to coach both high school and AAU ball in the city after a successful NBA career. There has been some concern expressed about the hire, given that Hardaway has zero coaching experience above the high school level -- but his name brings excitement back to the program, something that had been lacking under Smith. More importantly, Hardaway brings recruiting connections. Due to his time at East High School in Memphis and with the Team Penny grassroots program, Hardaway has ties to a number of the top prospects in the area. Memphis faithful are hoping that will translate into commitments....

Stage II: Penny circles in during July live periods
...Hardaway, Miller and the rest of the staff hit the trail hard in July. The aforementioned prospects -- Wiseman, Watford, Hurt -- are among the top targets, but Memphis also watches CJ Walker and Jaden McDaniels. Miller's former program, M33M, has become Hoop City Basketball Club, and they have featured Wiseman, Watford, Lawson and Kira Lewis following the Nike Peach Jam. Memphis' newfound prowess on the recruiting trail is on display at the Las Vegas Summer Showcase, an event run by Scott Robinson -- who worked at Memphis under John Calipari. The two headlining teams? Hoop City BC, featuring Wiseman, Watford, Lawson and Lewis, and D1 Minnesota, featuring Hurt....

Stage III: It's visit season, and Penny makes his move
It's a critical Thursday night for Hardaway's program. Not only does a sellout crowd of 18,000 fans show up, and not only do Memphis natives Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, Blocboy JB and Derez Deshon perform, but Hardaway brings in tons of recruits. Wiseman is there unofficially; Jeffries has returned a couple weeks after taking his official visit; Trendon Watford shows up, with Memphis looking like a potential favorite; ESPN 100 Jahmius Ramsey is on campus; five-star Precious Achiuwa is a surprise visitor after being considered a St. John's vs. UConn battle; and ESPN 100 guard Boogie Ellis takes an unofficial visit despite leaning toward Duke and North Carolina. Because it's held on a Thursday rather than a Friday, Memphis essentially has the night to itself. The event has generated plenty of social media buzz and made the Tigers the epicenter of the recruiting world during the week....

                    Intermission:
Hardaway's first season at Memphis ends with a 22-14 record, fifth place in the American Athletic Conference at 11-7. The Tigers -- who reached the second round of the NIT -- were among the fastest-paced teams in the country, and won nine of their final 13 games to end the season. They won four games against NCAA tournament competition: UCF twice (by a combined 44 points), Temple once and Yale in double-overtime. Hardaway is losing all five starters, but there are certainly signs of optimism in Memphis.

Stage IV: Penny owns the spring, and Memphis blows up the national picture
March 6, 2018 thru May 17, 2019: Memphis secures the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. With Achiuwa in the fold, Hardaway and Memphis are atop the recruiting rankings. The Tigers now have three five-star prospects in the fold in Wiseman, Achiuwa and Jeffries, along with ESPN 100 guards Ellis and Quinones. The four-star center Dandridge and four-star point guard Baugh -- two Memphis products -- round out the group. For the first time since 2012, a school besides Duke or Kentucky has the best recruiting class in the country. And it's Memphis and Penny Hardaway -- just 14 months after landing his first college job."

I have a distinct feeling a lot of these articles are going to need an edit in 5-10 years.

Cincinnati Basketball: Jarron Cumberland injury a concern for Bearcats - FanSided Sports

Cincinnati Basketball star Jarron Cumberland has been dealing with a foot injury all summer. Should Bearcat fans be worried about it longterm?

"Cincinnati Basketball star Jarron Cumberland has been dealing with a foot injury all summer and was a non-participant in Bearcat Madness. Do Bearcat fans need to be worried?

Cincinnati Basketball and reigning American Player of the Year Jarron Cumberland did not participate in the Bearcats Midnight Madness of Friday Night. Cumberland has apparently yet to practice with the Bearcats this entire summer as he has been dealing with a foot injury. Bearcats head coach John Brannen was dismissive with the media on Friday afternoon saying “You’d have to talk to the doctors,” when asked about the status of his star player...."

In addition, "Freshman guard Jeremiah Davenport will miss time after a summer knee surgery, he’s expected to return in December but may be a candidate for a redshirt depending on how his recovery goes. Trevor Moore will also miss some time, the junior is expected to miss a minimum of six weeks with an Achilles injury. This effectively rules him out for the Bearcats season opener against Ohio State.

Prince Toyambi will also miss some time and has been ruled out indefinitely. The nature of his absence is said to be medical related but that Brannen would know more in the coming weeks. Toyambi was a redshirt last season...."

Hate to see this. Worst thing that can happen is for them to struggle in non-con only to get healthy in the conference season.

AAC Daily: Football Makes Progress as Basketball Inches Closer - American Athletic Conference Blog

"The 2019 college football season has been flying by and overall, it has been pretty good to The American so far. There have been a few speed bumps for programs around the league, but three ranked teams show the amazing amount of progress made since the conference was founded.

But even with all the excitement around AAC football, it's hard to ignore the buzz that is building as the college basketball approaches. It only makes sense. The American sent seven teams to the men's basketball post-season last year and showed up big.

UCF took the Duke Blue Devils to the wire in the NCAA tournament. Houston made a trip to the Sweet 16, while Wichita State made the NIT Final Four and South Florida won the CBI. So there's a lot of reasons for fans in the AAC to be excited. Especially those in Memphis as the Tigers get ready to unleash the nation's top recruiting class on college basketball.

We're talking that and more on Wednesday's AAC Daily. As always, you can catch episodes of the program anywhere with iTunes, Spreaker, iHeartRadio, and Spotify."
