    • "SEC Offseason Report: Power Rankings and Burning Questions for 2019-20" - Sports Illustrated

      By ERIC SINGLE
      July 30, 2019, 11:20am cst

"As the midpoint of college basketball’s offseason approaches, it’s time to check in on every major conference. Every team in the country has questions at this point of the summer, some more pressing than others. So in addition to power ranking each league, we’ll be asking some burning questions about the conference that won’t be answered until tip-off. With the AAC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and Pac-12 all down, we saved the best for last: the SEC....

#8. Ole Miss: Kermit Davis’s debut season was a sweeping success even in light of the Rebels’ late spring fade, and he will have the SEC’s leading returning scorer in Breein Tyree at his disposal for year two....

#11. South Carolina: Remember when the Gamecocks earned the fourth seed (and the final double-bye) in the SEC tournament simply by winning every game they were supposed to? Wild times. Frank Martin’s job is about to get a lot tougher without do-everything forward Chris Silva...."

      • Texas Southern Non-Conference Schedule.jpg

Not sure anyone in the country will have a more difficult Non-Conference (NC) schedule then Texas Southern. They had the #1 NC schedule last year and had upsets on the road against Baylor, Oregon, and Texas A&M.

another shocker: let me rephrase. I cannot understand why that ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT is D1. The players are doing the best the can, winning a few times as you mentioned. My point is about the department as a whole. When you have to send your student-athletes on the road that much to pay bills, maybe you shouldn't play at the highest level.

      • That's freaking brutal. And also kind ridiculous that they have two home games--just two!--in their entire nonconference.

        • feel bad for their student athletes.. the number of buy games on that schedule tells me that they need that money to pay for salaries, facilities etc. sheesh, there should only be about 120 ncaa division one programs.

I'm guessing that schedule is actually the primary draw for attending their program.

            • Texas Southern needs the money. I agree, they should not be D1, along with about 100 other schools.

Yet, they beat Baylor, Oregon, and Texas AM and played Iowa St and Arizona St within 12.

I do agree with your point though. NCAA basketball needs to go the way of football. D1-A and D1AA, but with abilities for conferences to move up (or down) with consistent quality play.

            • If we took out schools that should not be D-1 the MVC would only have about 3 members. Lol!

those hanging on a prayer include drake, evansville, indiana state, uni, illinois state, siu, and valpo. most of these because the state systems are in such bad shape. i'm hoping b. mullins is able to make it a good run at siu and they're able to keep him because with falling enrollment and a nasty state budget, it's amazing that sports haven't been dropped in illinois.. in fact, it's amazing that one of the state schools hasn't closed altogether.

            • SEC college basketball teams, ranked for the 2019-2020 season - SB Nation Sports

"Football will always be king in the Southeastern Conference, but the basketball ain’t bad either.

After much speculation over the timeframe for this period’s arrival, the days of the SEC being the ultimate also-ran in college basketball’s power conference tier appear to have finally come and gone. Last spring the league produced at least one Final Four team for the fourth time in the last six years, made up 25 percent of the Sweet 16, and then followed up that successful tournament showing by bringing in three of the highest-profile coaching hires in the sport.

The conference’s climb into the conversation with the ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten figures to continue in 2019-20. Multiple teams at the top of the SEC food chain appear fully capable of winning a national title, and it wouldn’t be a total shock if more than half of the league earned at-large bids on Selection Sunday.

Let’s run through the current hierarchy of the league as we inch closer to the season tipping off in November....
              -
              11. SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS - (Cancun Challenge)
              2018-19 Record: (16-16, 11-7)
              2018-19 SEC Finish: T-4th

South Carolina has been anything but predictable under Frank Martin. Four seasons ago, the Gamecocks started 15-0 and still ended in the NIT. A year later, Martin and company turned a good, not great regular season into one of the more improbable Final Four runs in recent memory. Last season, USC was a dismal 5-7 in non-conference play, only to turn around and win 11 SEC games and finish alone in fourth place in the final league standings.

The point is, who knows what to expect from South Carolina. Martin has a solid young nucleus of talent to build around moving forward, but at the moment, replacing leading scorer and 2018-29 SEC defensive player of the year Chris Silva seems like an awfully tall task.

              7. OLE MISS REBELS - (AAC/SEC Challenge)
              2018-19 Record: (20-13, 11-5)
              2018-19 SEC Finish: T-6th

There may not have been a head coach in college basketball who had a better first year at a new gig than Kermit Davis did at Ole Miss in 2018-19. The Rebels won 20 games, were near the top of the SEC standings from the start of conference play to the end, and made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015 in a year where no one had predicted such an accomplishment.

An adequate second act is the new task for Davis, and thankfully he has the SEC’s leading returning scorer to assist him. Breein Tyree (17.9 ppg) is the 2018-19 First Team All-SEC honoree who’s back in college for another round. Devontae Shuler (10.3 ppg) and Blake Hinson (8.3 ppg) are also back after solid seasons, but it might be the play of a pair of JuCo transfers — Bryce Williams and Khadim Sy — that determines whether or not the Rebels are able to equal or surpass last season’s accomplishments...."

              • Ole Miss Basketball: Ranking Rebels’ 2019-20 non-conference opponents - FanSided Sports

                by Donovan Darlington
                Posted: 09/07/19, 7:00am cst

The 2019-20 non-conference schedule Ole Miss Basketball provides a great opportunity to impress. Here is a ranking of those non-conference opponents.

"The non-conference schedule for Ole Miss Basketball is set, and the Rebels are sure to be tested against many of these opponents. Decent mid-majors, fringe tournament teams, and a squad that is predicted to be one of the nation’s best all make up this non-conference schedule.

Coming off of a trip to the NCAA Tournament, Ole Mis Basketball look to begin the season strong with the non-conference schedule. As a whole, I see that the competition the Rebels will face early in the season will help boost their confidence leading into conference play.

With that said, the non-conference schedule is far from a cakewalk. Teams such as Butler, Syracuse, and Wichita State are often regulars in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse is the only one of the three that was in it last year, but each of these teams has the talent to get there this season....

The toughest game on this schedule is that with Memphis. The Tigers had the best recruiting class in the country, and analysts everywhere are exclaiming that their young talent is enough to cement them as one of the best teams in college basketball. An experienced Rebels squad against the Tigers should be fun.

Now, let’s take a look at each team on this non-conference schedule and rank them accordingly.

                14. Mississippi College (Exhibition, Nov. 4)
                13. Tennessee Tech (Dec. 29)
                12. Western Michigan (Nov. 15)
                11. Middle Tennessee (Dec. 14)
                10. Arkansas State (Nov. 8)
                9. Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 21)
                8. CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 19)
                7. Seattle (Dec. 7)
                6. Penn State (Nov. 27, NIT Tip-off)
                5. Wichita State (Sat. Jan. 4), 2018-19 Record: 22-15, Conference: American
After finishing 6th in the American last season, and losing their leading scorer in Markis McDuffie, plenty of questions surround the Shockers. They are simply not the threat that they were a few years back, but that is not to say they cannot get back to that level. Their young talent is maturing, and for that, they may be a solid competitor in their conference. I still feel like experience will be an issue. Ole Miss will pull out the win.
                4. Butler (Dec. 3)
                3. Norfolk State (Nov. 12)
                2. Oklahoma State/Syracuse (Nov. 29, NIT Tip-off)
                1. Memphis (Nov. 23). 2018-19 Record: 21-13, Conference: American
The Memphis Tigers are certainly receiving more hype heading into this season than any other team in the country. This is due to the program having the strongest recruiting class in the country in 2019. Head Coach Penny Hardaway has done a great job getting top players there, but now, what will he do with them? This new talent Memphis possesses will cause the rotation to look completely different this season. Freshmen James Wiseman, Precious Achiuwa, Boogie Ellis, and others will look to bring Memphis basketball back. I am excited to see what the game between Ole Miss and Memphis will bring. The battle-tested talent of Ole Miss facing off against the incredible freshmen Memphis now has will certainly be a game that could end up being fantastic.

Overall, this is not an overly challenging non-conference schedule, but Ole Miss does have plenty of big opportunities to impress. I believe they will do just that and pick up some key victories that suggest they are an NCAA Tournament team yet again."

                • SEC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2019-20 season - FanSided SPorts

                  by Matthew Travis
                  posted: 09/13/19, 8:30am cst

SEC Basketball enters the 2019-20 season as one of the strongest conferences in the nation, the question is, how far can an SEC team go?

"The Southeastern Conference has forever been known as a football conference and for the most part, that is still true. However, in recent years SEC basketball has gotten much better and they’re starting to change that reputation a bit....Since 2011 the SEC has had seven teams make it to the Final Four, which is tied with the Big Ten for the most out of any conference. That being said there are some big expectations for SEC Basketball heading into the 2019-20 season....

                  14. Vanderbilt...
                  13. Missouri...
                  12. South Carolina is one of the most unpredictable teams in the SEC and they could potentially be one of the worst teams when all is said and done. The Gamecocks will be without 2018-19 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and leading scorer, Chris Silva going into the 2019-20 season. Silva, who averaged 15.2 points per game last season graduated and with that, the Gamecocks will be without their best player going into 2019-20. The good news however is that A.J. Lawson, USC’s second-leading scorer, will be back in Columbia for his sophomore season. Lawson averaged 13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last season and he will undoubtedly be a leader and one of the best players for the Gamecocks next season. Going into his sophomore season Lawson will have a lot on his shoulders.

South Carolina made it to the Final Four only three seasons ago in 2017 and they have been fighting to get back into the tournament ever since then. Unfortunately since their Final Four appearance back in 2017 South Carolina is only one game over .500.Anything above that would be an improvement as the Gamecocks went 17-16 in 2017-18 and 16-16 in 2018-19. That being said, not a whole lot of expectations will be placed upon Frank Martin’s squad this season especially without their best player, Chris Silva.

The question is, how will incoming freshmen Trey Anderson, Jalyn McCreary, Trae Hannibal, Wildens Leveque, Mike Green and redshirt freshman Jermaine Couisnard be used and how will they help out this Gamecock team that looks as if it will struggle? None of these six players appeared in ESPN’s Top-100 so it makes you wonder how much these guys can really contribute. In 2019-20 South Carolina will tumble a bit from their .500 mark of 16-16 from last season as they will finish this year with a record of 8-5 in non-conference play and 7-11 in SEC play for a total record of 15-16.

The Gamecocks start out the season with several easy non-conference games before playing multiple very tough games against Houston, Clemson and Virginia, plus matchups with Wichita State and either West Virginia or Rhode Island in Cancun, Mexico. That being said, Frank Martin and company have a chance to either get several statement wins and be in a good position heading into SEC play, or they can get caught behind and not be in nearly as good of a position. Unfortunately for those of you who go to USC, I think it will be the latter of the two.

The best player on this year’s South Carolina team is destined to be Lawson. As mentioned earlier, Lawson was a big part of last year’s team and was a major reason why they finished with an 11-7 record against SEC opponents. If Lawson can manage to put up similar numbers, or maybe even a bit better then he will put the Gamecocks in a very good position to surprise a lot of people.

                  11.Texas A&M...
                  10. Arkansas...
                  9. Georgia...
                  8. Tennessee...
                  7. Mississippi T - he Ole Miss Rebels, or sorry Land Sharks, I mean… no one is quite sure what they’re called but one thing that is true is that whatever they are, they are coming off one of their best seasons in several years. For the first time since 2015 and only the third time since 2003, Ole Miss made the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately it didn’t last long as the Rebels were bounced in the first round at the hands of Oklahoma, but nonetheless, we saw something out of Ole Miss that we haven’t seen in several years.

The question however is whether or not they can make it to consecutive tournaments for the first time since 2001 and 2002. If there has ever been a time for the Rebels to do that, it would be this season. A big reason for that is because Ole Miss will be getting their leading scorer from last season, Breein Tyree, back for his senior season. Tyree went for 17.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last season and was a big reason as to why they went onto make the tournament.

Getting him back is huge because it allows the Rebels to have their top player back in addition to that they also have Devontae Shuler, Blake Hinson and KJ Buffen coming back as well. Shuler, Hinson and Buffen were all very large pieces for the Rebels last season and getting them back alongside Tyree means that they will be a very similar team this season as they were last year. In addition to their several key players coming back, the Rebels also have three incoming true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen who could be getting minutes this upcoming season. One of these freshmen who will likely get significant time is guard, Austin Crowley. Crowley is a four-star shooting guard out of Sunrise Christian in Wichita, Kansas. Crowley was ranked 124th in the Class of 2019 by 247 Sports and he will likely get a significant amount of playing time next season.

Another player who could get some playing time for the Rebels next season is freshman small forward, Antavion Collum. Collum is a three-star small forward out of Tennessee Preparatory Academy in Memphis, Tennessee. Collum is 6’7″, 215lbs and he has a serious chance to help out Ole Miss next year. So out of all these players who will contribute in Oxford next season, who will be the best? Breein Tyree will once again be Ole Miss’ best player and leading scorer. Heading into his senior season and playing with a team he is familiar with, Tyree will only get better and because of it the Rebels will as well.

Ole Miss has several tough games during non-conference play, but they will manage to get through it with a record of 12-1. The lone loss will come against Memphis at the end of November while they will be tested against Oklahoma State or Syracuse as apart of the NIT Tip-Off and also against Butler in December. (NO MENTION OF THEIR GAME AT THE ROUNDHOUSE) With a 12-1 record going into conference play, Ole Miss will finish off the season with a record of 22-9 after getting through SEC play with a record of 10-8. What this means is that Ole Miss will be in a very good position going into the SEC Tournament and will undoubtedly have a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

                  6. Mississippi State...
                  5. Auburn...
                  4. Alabama...
                  3. LSU...
                  2. Florida...
                  1. Kentucky...:"

I thought I saw on Twitter that it was expected to drop this week. Oddly enough, the Big XII hasn't released the schedule yet either. I've seen the Pac-12, BIg East, and Big 10. Without looking, I'd guess SEC and ACC are out. Hopefully, The American shows up soon.
