As a parent I would be very worried if my son didn't want to go out of town after high school for college. Leaving the nest, meeting new people and learning to live away from one's comfort zone is a huge part of growing up.
"Leaving town" means very different things if the town is Wichita or Manhattan. BCSCat you are showing your ignorance about WSU and Wichita.

I went to high school in Wichita and WSU was a very eye opening expereince. I met lots of folks from different cities and states. And Wichita really is a big city and I discovered many areas of the big city that I didn't know existed, like the Tropics on North Broadway.

Please expand on the diversity at the KSU campaus. I suppose the Johnson City is different than Medicine Lodge.

Conner is solid. I've seen him play twice and hoped he would be a Shocker. Breaking Ricky Ross's City League scoring record for a City League game was huge for a Soph. His verbal was no surprise and it would be wonderful if we get to play KU before he leaves there. The only way that will occur would be if KU has to play us at the Dance.

Now what I am about to mention is a true story. I have also seen Ron Baker play twice in Shocker scrimmages. Before I had heard that Conner had given a verbal to his dream school, I told a Shocker buddy of mine the following words. "I would not trade Ron Baker away for Conner. I like Ron's over all game more so for the D-1 level than Conner."

Ron Baker was one of the top performers in a couple of Shocker scrimmages. I had already heard he was a sleeper. However, after watching him play, I was beyond impressed and knew we got a steal on Ron. Ron Baker will get his fair share of playing time as a Shock and I predict he will make us very happy as Shocker fans.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

As a native of Kansas City I want to thank you so much for the enormous chuckle I got from your description of Wichita as a "big city".

Kansas State has some 23,500 students from all 50 states and over 90 countries so, yes, there is plenty of diversity.

And I love it when someone from KC wants to poke fun at Wichita.

KC? Really? It isn't even St. Louis.

If you don't see Wichita as a big city, then you are just exposing your limited knowledge and experience.

I asked two girls I work with from Sri Lanka that are WSU alums how big they thought Wichita was. Their answers: 1) 50,000, 2) 1.5 million.

I don't know whtat that has to do with anything, but thought it was interesting. Their biggest gripe about Wichita: It has no natural wonders or monuments. Apparently to Sri Lankan's, Niagra Falls is synomounous to the US as the Coliseum is to Italy or the Eifel Tower is to Paris.

Kansas City is a big city says anyone who hasn't traveled outside of Kansas. Junction City State is a dump. Why any good Western KS family would send their kid there over Ft. Hays is beyond me. I guess pawn shops and strip clubs provide an education of sorts.

Nobody in this country thinks of KC as a big city any more frequently than they do Wichita. Sorry 'bout that. Surely you must know this fact from your STL neighbors, as your STL neighbors are reminded by their Chicago neighbors, and the Chicago neighbors are reminded with their NYC neighbors. Most people around the nation look at the KC skyline and think to themselves, "How in the hell does that town have professional sports franchises?"

And hearing your theory on the why/how of leaving for college - when I'd bet good fundage on the fact that you were raised in Kansas somewhere, went to Tractor Tech of Kansas, and now reside in another part of Kansas - makes for some solid ironic chuckles. That's quite the resume of a life-long world traveler seeking the zen of cultural diversity.

As the largest metro in Kansas, the KCK area has no D1 university, hence, local kids HAVE to move a distance from home to attend one. The second largest metro (and largest single city) in Kansas already has a D1 research university, therefore kids aren't required to puddle jump to attend school. Sorry if that phenomenon chaps your hide.

Wichita, along with it's business core that is dominated by WSU alums, produces roughly 50% of the exports for the State of Kansas. Tell me something tangible that comes out of the KCK metro. Let me help you, there's NOTHING. Nothing more than service based industry fluff produced by a bunch of unhappy people moving imaginary paper from one file to another in an Office Space-esque environment. Wait... I guess there's always Garmin - co-founded by a WSU EE alum.

Here we go again.. your insecurity needs are coming back out again from beyond the closet. I guess you must be bored with another losing football campaign coming up.

I have relatives in the NYC area. They constantly confuse Kansas City and Wichita all the time. Whenever the Royals play the Yanks, they ask if I'm going because it's in the same city I live in, right? They truly think Wichita and Kansas City are one in the same. And anyone outside of Kansas pretty much thinks the same. I get good chuckles out of your lack of intelligence. Kansas City is flyover country to 99% of this country. Seriously.

As far as Aggie Tech goes, no secure fan would care enough to go out spouting about their agricultural school on another message board. This just confirms how low down the totem pole Ag Tech is. That's why you never see any KU fans here at all, and if they do come here, they don't throw enrollment figures around or how close they are to a "big metropolis". Why? Because they're secure with themselves. They at least have that going for them. The same can't be said for you and your legion.

That's why you should feel lucky that you lucked in to a BCS conference. And it's also why you should feel very worried when conference alignment talks come up because I promise you that Ag Tech will be left out in the open because it is not desirable and nobody wants them.

Not sure that it really matters...but here are some rankings:

KC is the 37th biggest city in the US and Wichita comes in at 49th. Yeah, so I'm thinking most people outside of Kansas probably don't care...and considering Sedgwick County was the most populous county in Kansas only until recently, I'll still say not much difference.

How did we get spun off onto this anyway?

On the topic at hand: Kids decide on a school for varying reasons. The best and most mature thing to do regarding a recruit leaving town to play for another school is to wish him luck. He's 18, he made the most difficult and important decision in his life so far. Sometimes these decisions work, sometimes they don't. Wish him well, time will tell. And hope you get a chance to play (and beat) his team in the NCAA's.

Off topic: Having lived in Chicago, San Diego, Baltimore and other metros, when people spout KC as big city, it really makes me laugh. Kansas City is an oversized Omaha with two sports teams, nothing more. Fever is right, KC is simply at the center of "flyover land" and to the rest of the country KC is as obscure as Duluth.

By the way, the way this thread has swerved, now is when you really miss a good old dose of C0|db|00ded demographics.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I loved the stats!!! It took me back three or four years to the Wichita/ Omaha debates on VT!

Cold dispensing his facts, eOmaha dispensing his, the whole shooting match!!!

I used to chime in just to stir things up. And Fever, you may remember me doing this, one of my favorite things to do was to inteject news stories whenever cattle were loose on the freeway in either city! I still remember the story that pissed off my fellow Omahan's. 200 hog carcasses were spilled out of a semi right on the interstate! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

And yes, stories of cattle on the freeway pop up in that megalopolis of Kansas Cuty, too!!!

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.
