I don't see any mention of financial problems in that link. Just a mention of responding to an audit.

I do recall that ast summer MSU sold one of their cattle herds to cover some expenses. MSU fans said that was just routine, but selling assets to cover expenses doesn't seem like a good "routine" to have.

$165,000 to, and I quote, "to take next year and work with my colleagues across the country and here at MSU to sharpen up my teaching and research skills so that I can return to the classroom in the fall of 2012."

The stimulus plan for shovel ready jobs was a more effective use of dollars.

No wonder this country is going broke.

You know what CUSA was looking for with a team? A mediocre university, with horrible financial problems, that's only popular and successful sport being basketball, can't even sell out their arena, underselling nearly 3k tickets on average, during the one single year that MSU actually wins the Valley.

Yep, CUSA definitely wants that fine institution involved in their conference. Probably the single best candidate to join CUSA in the whole country.

While I admit I found much satisfaction in a bunch of MSU fans embarassing themselves on several message boards, having a Valley school suffering financial woes does nothing good for any of the other schools in the conference.

Oh well, MSU fans hate me more than any other fanbase, so rather than worry about the negative impact this has on the Valley, I guess I was right when I laughed at their cattle herd a year ago and it's time for me to gloat! :yahoo:

Rather than worry about MSU leaving the Valley in turmoil when they bolt for C-USA, we really need to boot them for a bigger name with more stable finances.

Does anyone have the balance sheets handy from Coffeyville CC?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

SB, with what you said and what was in the story being so disconnected, it's no wonder you are a spin-repeating parrot.

Except there aren't a lot of realistic options. We're not going to pick up a Butler/Dayton/Xavier. Outside of Majerus, SLU has no desire. ORU is about the only option on our side of the Valley that may accept that wouldn't be a total killer. UMKC isn't attractive. Nor are any of the schools in Arkansas. Outside of our area you have the Dakotas (not attractive) and a couple of the UW-Whatevers. None of the other Illinois schools would make any sense.

You're risking another Evansville. Student population under 5k. An arena that only holds a little over 5k. I believe the record is 5432 and average 3362. Not really sure how that's an upgrade.

If schools leave the Valley for any conference "step-up" and Wichita State doesn't leave, it will be the nail in the coffin for us as very soon money will override sporting and we, along with most every other non-BCS team will be playing a different game.

I'm not giving up hope that Jim Schaus set us up to be very attractive to another conference, and that Eric Sexton is doing his best to maintain the status quo.

The only one with better attendance than SIU (and SIU had a horrid year or three) is Wright State. Do any of these schools really offer much in making the conference better/stronger? Maybe a case could be made for a couple, but the Valley adding teams is only good if by some miracle they could add any of the ones below...

                              Wishful Thinking category:

                              Butler - 4500 - 128M - 7178
                              Dayton - 10500 - 346.6M - 12567
                              SLU - 16300 - 800M - 6299
                              Xavier - 7000 - 101M - 10098

Obviously, I'm bored at work again.

Did you include graduate schools in the enrollment figures? I'm fairly certain that Creighton isn't up to 7400 undergrads.

Looking at those endowment figures is pretty alarming. I had no idea we had so many poorly capitalized institutions in the MVC.
