LOL MSU fans are so desperate to believe that they are top dogs, and CUSA wants them, they actually said on their message board, that even though they denied the rumor, they didn't deny that they were going as non-football only. I mean are they serious? MSU is pathetic. They think they're leaps and bounds above WSU just because they have football. Even though their flagship sport (basketball) they can't even come within 3,000 seats of filling their arena to max capacity, the one year they actually win the Valley in 20. But I'm sure the reason was because of all the folks in Springfield with their HD televisions watching the game from home, you know, because Springfield is the Mecca of college hoops TV market, which CUSA is desperate to get. What a metropolis Springfield is.

This is 100% fact. ES would make a really good NAIA AD somewhere.

This "rumor" is quite a mystery to me:
1.) Why would CUSA go to 13 teams?
2.) Why would it want a member to join as a non-football member? What is the benefit to that exactly?
3.) Is the Springfield, Missouri media market really that desirable?
4.) How can a school that has won 1 conference title in its most prominent sport in the last 20 years be that big of a lure to C-USA? And with all of those NCAA appearances (or lack thereof) to boot?

My theory is that the MSU player who tweeted this was busy looking through the MSU message board and came across one of the dozen threads about their obsession and fascination with C-USA and just assumed it was happening and tweeted it.
Don't get me wrong, ADES is good at some things--mainly maintaining the status quo and he's a really nice guy to boot, but this would be totally out of character for him. Also, you'd think we would've heard more rumblings from the athletic department leading up to such a big move, and the fact that we've heard nothing at all would seem to back up that.

I think this is the key. Why would they want that?

It's worked out well for the Big East.

C-USA will never be a power in football, however, developing a strong basketball conference is something they can do. They could put themselves in a position where a minimum of 3 or 4 teams make the dance every year. Also, more exposure in basketball could lead to better football recruiting.

Certainly this is above ADES' pay-grade and this would be Beggs' decision? I do not see ADES telling PDB "no, I won't assist you in that effort".

But this is all moot, really, for the rest of the reasons Fever has outlined.

But the Big East is one of those weird conferences where it has a mix of both FBS, FCS, and non-football schools. C-USA is not like that. Every member of C-USA supports an FBS football program.

And even if we were to go by your theory of it wanting to develop a strong basketball conference, what exactly has MSU done to garner that? They are one of the last Valley schools to have been to an NCAA Tournament. Their fan support is marginal. Their media market is marginal. I guess when you compare that to other C-USA schools they fit in with those areas, but the lack of I-A football is what really makes all of this quite silly and rather funny.

              ... No really, deuces.

Very much a presidential decision. However, it wouldn't surprise me if ADES blurted that type of thing out of his mouth..

This may be harsh, but I secretly wish that when President Beggs retires that whoever we get as the new president overhauls the top of the athletic department.

I am having a real hard time not going thermonuclear on MVCfans. The thread over there is exactly the type of thread that makes me just want to post 1,000 pictures of midgets! This is simply because of the way some MSU fans are acting. that said, I've been tame and reasoned in my responses.

The fact of the matter is this, most schools in the Valley that aspire to be competitive, at least hope for a better conference. Wichita State fans would love to be in a more competitive, higher profile league. Creighton fans pine for an all Catholic league, or a premier basketball league. Illinois State fans wish they could be in the Big 12. Bradley fans wish for something better as well. The Evansville's of the world only aspire to be competitive in the Valley, heck, they are glad they haven't yet sunk back to D-2. With that, I totally understand the excitement many of the Bears fans have regarding this rumor.

That said, their behavior has been nothing less than comical. They have slammed the rest of the conference and think they are something they really aren't. And as the rumors vet out to be just that, rumors, they really look stupid.

Everyone should read the entire thread on the C-USA board. http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=501144&page=1 It is really instructive on how not to act. If Wichita State gets the opportunity to leave the Valley, I hope Shocker fans don't pollute their new conference's message board the way Bears fans have. Especially before anything concrete has been done or any ink has dried. What they have done is make themselves and the Valley look small. I was laughing when this broke, belly laughing as I started reading the bbs thread, but now it has simply become pathetic.

No, but they are acting exactly like their big brothers at Mizzou were acting right about a year ago. Didn't work out well for them, either.

Given how the Missouri fanbase talked about themselves and the Big 12 when they thought they were getting an invite to the Big 10, you've got to wonder if there is something in the water in that state.
