Years ago, I used to buy 20-game cards that could be used all at one time; or two per game, or as a single ticket per game. How would they know, on a sold basis, which game or games to count that for? I know WSU gate has click-type counters they use, but that can't be too accurate.

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

Have the fire marshals for the top 3 been informed that they average a crowd larger than capacity?!?

I'm not sure if games at the Sprint Center, etc. count towards home games, but that might be it.

That's a seating capacity. Does that mean you can't sell standing room only tickets?

            It does.

KU's game at the Sprint is a "home" game and thus gets KU's total attendance about AFH's capaicty of 16,300.

Everyone pretty much goes by tickets sold.
Is that an assumption, or factual knowledge? Just curious. That would explain K-State's place on the list, in spite of the fact Bramlage seems to be a ghost town when K-State's not playing conference or someone of note.

So season tickets as a constant + walk-up/single-session + students (however they do that)?
Factual knowledge. It'd be tough to find a school that doesn't do it that way.
Therefore, most all schools' numbers are skewed in the same direction, so the rankings would still be relevant.
              Sort of.

From a fiscal perspective of the school, yes, but not for a judge of consistent atmosphere and overall fan exuberance (which I think is probably the point of comparing these figures).
Baseball used to only report butts-in-seat in the box scores until Schaus showed up. That was changed to tickets sold.

I would rather have the butts in seat number than sold.

I'd be fine with butts in seats as long as every other school went to it. No reason to put us at a disadvantage.

Butts in seats (BIS) really does give all fair-weather southern schools an advantage, though. While BIS might well be the most logical measure to use, just by the definition of "attendance' -- after all, it doesn't say "thought about attending" -- the really meaningful number to the athletics department is tickets "sold," because that is something that is budgetable. Oveer the years, I imagine there is a pretty stable correlation between "sold" and BIS for use in estimating concessions, etc.

Even when they were reporting butt in seat they were still reporting to the NCAA tickets sold. So I don't know why it would put you at a disadvantage besides people would be able to know the truth.

Of course in our society today were less concerned about the truth and are more concerned about showing and illusion of progress - but I digress.

I think just about everyone uses tickets sold. Bramlage has been full for the most part since Huggs year except for when school is not in session and has been sold out on a season ticket basis. Keep in mind that students make up nearly half of the 12,528 capacity in the Bram. Very different situation than WSU. Also keep in mind that many non-student ticket holders drive 2 hours of more to attend games in Manhattan. All that said it's really cool to see that our little fly-over state has all 3 of our Div 1 schools in the top 7! Thanks for posting.
