There is a perception that if the Valley office has a option between screwing wsu or not they will choose screw wsu - always.

The problem u have is wsu represents a real risk to most if the mvc teams of overwhelming it due to resources available is my guess.

Reading this thread it sounds like everyone agrees he will move on to a bigger program, it's just a matter of whether it happens this year or a couple years down the road.

Is it completely inconceivable that he could be our Mark Few?
Here is an article I found quite a while ago. It's from 2005 which is why I haven't posted it as I know people can change in how they feel/think over time. So it's possible this isn't the same Marshall as we have now. But I do think it gives us a glimpse at what his goals are and how he views things professionally:

A quote about leaving Winthrop (again this was in 2005)...sound familiar?

"I've got a great situation here. Unless it was a significant move, a significant jump (in salary), other people might not see what I see, but I'm not going to do it."
The quote about why would he move to the midwest kind of made me chuckle:

"I think he was looking to conquer the world, make it to the SEC or NBA in a giant leap right away," Kresse said. "I think he was looking to go right to a major conference school, an ACC or SEC-type school. I don't think he understood that you probably have to take an intermediate stop, at a higher midmajor."

If his desire to skip an intermediate job was rooted in ego in the past, it is now rooted in maturity. Marshall realizes Winthrop is a good job, and not one to leave lightly. Most of the traditional stepping-stone leagues are in the Midwest, making a job there a considerable risk for a slight increase in pay.

"I'd also be moving to an area of the country I'm not familiar with," Marshall said. "Why put myself in that position?"
That's just a couple quotes that caught my attention. Not necessarily good or bad, just caught my eye is all.

Overall this is a heck of an article and I encourage everyone to read it. Gives some great insight into the man that is Marshall.

IMHO I think he is still a very motivated man that is looking to push himself as far as he can. He's a guy that is very confident he can coach at the highest of levels if given a chance. I do think we are a stepping stone for him. That doesn't mean he doesn't care about WSU. He is VERY passionate about WSU and does love it here. But he is a guy that if offered a new challenge on a slightly bigger stage for more money...he's gonna have a hard time saying no.

      • According to a source in Houston, the talk is there will be a bidding war for Smart between Missouri and North Carolina State. Marshall is the backup plan for both. I have seen pretty much the same thing elsewhere, such as the winner gets Smart, the loser, Marshall.

Yow is in Houston, I don't know about the Missouri AD, but I would expect him to be there for sure.

This is the second year I've payed some attention to coaching changes. It's worse than recruiting. A lot of misses and last minute surprises.

          • and however this turns out, I hope it ends soon, so if Marshall does leave, then we can find his replacement soon.

I hope he wouldn't go to Mizzou. I would understand if he left us to go "home" to the east coast with a good pay raise. But I don't wanna see our coach go to the Big XII again.

I will say IF he was to end up at Mizzou he would only be there long enough to get back to the east coast. I still think that is his ultimate goal (to coach in the ACC or SEC). Mizzou would be a stepping stone job also, tell there fans that and see how they respond LOL.

One thing I do know about Marshall is that he has a giant ego. If that satement about the winner gets Smart, the loser Marshall is really the way the coaching circles are viewing this, if I were Marshall I would say 'thanks, but no thanks. I'm no one's consolation prize." However, money talks and you just can't know what is truly going on in someone else's mind.

We love him here, we hope he stays.

Yup and for that reason, I would be surprised if Mizzou is even interested

                  • If Marshall does leave, which I do not think he will, will WSU pony up $750K for the next head coach? Is their a potential candidate still out there warranting that much money from us? Marshall was a great hire for us and warranted that type of money, I just don't see anyone else out there who we could lure for the same type of money. Any suggestions?

                    • I'm for waiting to see if we even have to. I don't like tempting fate all that much. It usually bites me in the butt.

How much do you think the 3 (Jans, Sutton, Manning) that we know are expressing interest are worth?

Hearing this morning from someone who would definitely know...Mick Cronin has accepted a 7-year offer from NC State to be their new coach.

                          I REALLY REALLY hope not

                          • The interesting thing about Mizzou is it is like the A&M position. The coach wasn't fired, he moved on leaving a pretty full stable. Many of the kids there Marshall also tried to recruit.

                            • I get a sense that Cronin would not be a popular hire from reading the posts after.
