I think a long run in the NIT is more beneficial than a one-and-done in the NCAA. First round games are generally not televised at a time when most can see them anyway. I know when we played in the Sweet 16, our game against St Johns was in the afternoon.

Our run in the NIT has garnered us more attention. Even though it is a less acclaimed tournament, our games are in prime time and on days the NCAA tournament is not being played.

Yes our Seton Hall game was during a workday at like 11:00 am or something like that. I didn't get to see it until later (I recorded it).

Maybe the question should be, would you take a chance for a long run in the NIT or a chance for a long or medium run in the NCAA.

You are always going to do everything you can to get to the Big Dance.

The NIT, CBI and CIT are consolation prizes at best. But if that is where your planted, then that's where you should try to bloom to steal a phrase from 3G's Charleston buddy.

All of them can have some positive benefit in some way or the other for the program. What those benefits are will vary with each team.

The goal, of course, is to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, or any post-season play for that matter, on a consistent basis. Something the Shocks are still aspiring to do.

I put this in another thread by accident...

Some good comments from Kevin Harlan today on 810 WHB (KC).

The NIT is struggling big time with extremely low ratings and losing money.

Nobody is watching the games. Less than a 1 share (of course).

Expects NCAA to eliminate NIT in at least a few years and consolidate into a 96 team big dance.

Of course, he doesn't have any inside info...just his gut from being in the biz.

Caused me to reply in the wrong thread...

Since they've already expanded past "the magical 64" I would like to see 96 with the NIT incorporated. This is how I'd do it:

32 conference tournament champions get an autobid and a first round bye. If you don't play in a top 32 conference, sorry about your luck. The remaining conference tourney and season champions get an autobid into the "play-in" round of 64 teams and you fill in the rest with at-larges. Those 64 are seeded and play and after the first round they are re-seeded and play a conference champion. The bracket is then set up in a 64 team format with 32 conference champions playing the 32 best at-larges in round 1. The tournament is pretty standard after that.

Wow, that sounds complicated. Can you include a diagram? ;)

I promise it is less complicated than the current format of 68 teams. ;-)

Basically it's a 96 team bracket with the first round bye dependent on winning your conference tourney. It helps the mids!

I don't mean to be negative about our success in the NIT, but we need to enjoy it for what it is.

Just where is all this exposure and hype about our success or any info on the NIT being published?

USA Today had 11 pages of sports in their Friday edition. Seven pages were on the NCAA and various teams. The were O words in the entire section about the NIT.

I have been in Atlanta for two days and there has not been one word printed about the NIT any of their papers.

I am thrilled and happy for the team that they have done well, and pleased for the players. But, it does not compare to being selected to the big dance, and certainly is vastly inferior to winning even just one NCAA game.

USA Today has been mentioned a couple of times now and I'm wondering just how many of the potential recruits do you suppose read USA Today for information on schools? My guess would be not very many. The exposure comes from being on the ESPN networks. Sportscenter also covers the games. I'm not saying they are having Specials for the NIT, but they are most certainly covering them. The exposure will most likely also get bigger and better now that we're down to the Final 4 and the Finals. That is where the prospects will see the much needed and wanted exposure. How much exposure, in any newspaper or television are the one- or two-and-dones getting? Pretty close to 0 from what I've seen.

                        Something to think about:

On the pre-game video introduction, it doesn't show 12 NIT berths or NIT success. There's your answer.

While I do believe having our games on the EPSN networks does give us more exposure

You would think ESPN would be pimping the NIT and Womens NCAA more since it's on their networks

Why they only talk about Va tech number one overall in the NIT, Goudeloc, and try to get someone else to hire our coach...sadly only mention of our team was a tag line in the last three games to the producers on ESPN Shocker Win.

As wsushox1 shows with every post we know what ESPN is.

For the Shockers to get to the NIT final four it will take 4 games beating teams with an approximate average RPI of 76. One of them we had to play as a true road game. For KU to get to the final four they will play 4 teams with an RPI average of approximately 66. If nothing else, what we are doing should give the returners pride and good vibes for next year. I'll take it over a one and done.

Isn't this a false choice? Since we are going gangbusters suddenly, who's to say we would have looked like Indiana State and lost our first one? It may well be a decision between winning a couple in the NCAA and a few in the NIT.
