For the long-term success of our program, an NCAA appearance is the only way to go.

When we speak to recruits, we mention big dance appearances.

When they visit and look up in the rafters...do they care about NIT banners?

If we were a young team there may be an argument for the NIT being better than a brief appearance in the Dance. But we're not. The NIT run is nice, but it doesn't trump a game or two in the Dance by any means. Not even winning the whole thing.

This NIT run beats the pants off a one-and-done trip the the big dance.

For one really good reason, we're still playing!!! I haven't had this much fun following the Shocks in several years.

When you say "we", I don't know if you mean the fans or the coaches. I don't think the coaches mention big dance appearances unless they've actually been to some. So far we haven't.

That's kind of his point right now I think. You don't go around bragging about NITs. Not at this level anyway.

I'm gonna say winning the NIT is better than 1-and-done in the Dance:

                1. Get more games. 2 home games = Basketball revenue

                2. Get arguably the same exposure (5 NIT games has to = 1 Big Dance game in viewers...maybe more).

                3. Sense of accomplishment. I don't necessarily believe in "momentum for next season", but seeing JT weep as "New York, New York" was playing is a moment I'll never forget...and I'm just a fan. Imagine how our guys felt.

                4. Recruiting bonus...more home games. The Nebraska bloodbath, plus a gritty game at VT, followed by a fun game vs COC. We're proving that we can hang at least with the mid-level ACC and Big 12 (-2) teams. "You can put us over the hump, Mr. Ellis"

Actually, I think we will be one of 17 teams who will still be playing tomorrow, but hey, who's counting.

Interestingly, our "friends" on the KSU message board seem to think our run so far in the NIT is better than going 0-1 or 1-1 in the NCAA's.

Actually ,, when We "WSU" :posterwsu: take the floor at MSG for our next game we will be ONE of only 8 mens BB teams left playing in the country, NO WAY that's not a Possitive for the program.

Kevin Harlan was on 810WHB just a bit ago talking about the NIT and NCAA. His take was that the ratings on the NIT are dismal compared to the NCAA tourney and that the NCAA is losing money on it. His view is that finances will drive the NCAA to absorb the NIT into the big dance relatively soon.

He also thinks the new TV format of 4 channels will make it much easier to absorb the volume of games being played.

Of course he and Kietzman think that will water down the experience. Maybe so, I don't know. They think D1 should be pared down to 150 teams or so...

I still like us going to MSG - we should enjoy it while it lasts. Who knows, maybe this could be the last NIT (or one of the last).

I think a long run in the NIT is more beneficial than a one-and-done in the NCAA. First round games are generally not televised at a time when most can see them anyway. I know when we played in the Sweet 16, our game against St Johns was in the afternoon.

Our run in the NIT has garnered us more attention. Even though it is a less acclaimed tournament, our games are in prime time and on days the NCAA tournament is not being played.
