  • Koch vs Phog

Did anyone else catch the comment by the ESPN announcer last night saying that the atmosphere at the phog "has nothing" on the atmosphere at the roundhouse?

I did hear that. Its at the 12:50 mark in the second half. I thought it was awesome. Of course no KU fan will ever think thats the case but that doesn't surprise me.

he did make the comparison. You can't deny it was awesome atmosphere last night. Not sure how they compare night in-night out, but last night was as good as it gets for college basketball anywhere.

When 21st and Hillside is at it's best there are very few venues that can match us!

Agreed. Listen up, You would be hard pressed to find a group of more loyal and rowdy fans in all of college basketball. However, the AFH has us beat every day of the week. Why? They have 6000 students who go to the games, stand the whole time and cheer. Pretty tough to beat the atmosphere there. We have about 200 die hard students. When the day comes that we can fill 116 and 117 with students then this can be brought up again. For now, don't embarrass yourself and drop it.

Food for thought though, can you imagine what the roundhouse would be like if the students did show? It would be sweet.

Sorry, but Koch Arena does compare with AFH.

Anytime a KU fan questions me on that, I ask them to go to a game in Wichita before commenting.

I've been to several games in AFH. It is a great, historical arena with a great atmosphere. Their student section is great.

But the overall atmosphere at Koch Arena is in the same league.

I've been to a handful of games at AFH and it's a hell of an atmosphere, but I've never been more impressed with it than CKA. And I have a KU buddy who has been to a few Shocker games who would say the same.

How about we just leave it at the fact that we have two great old barns that are great venues for college basketball in this state? Even Bramlage, WHEN FULL, gets pretty good. We love our hoops in this state...

We have a great arena and awesome fans, but the announcers last night were a bit over the top in their comparisons.

I've never been to a game in Allen Fieldhouse, but I"m pretty sure we place a fairly distant second. I think the deciding factors are 2 fold. 1. We don't have the student attendance, and students tend to be louder and more obnoxious than older folks--just facts. Look at Utah State for example. A great home atmosphere made up of a lot of students and of course others, but the students set the tone, and you have to have a substantial amount of them to do that. 2. Our crowd isn't as consistent--at least not this year. I'm not talking numbers, I'm talking rowdiness and volume. Corporate seats might mean $$, but they don't always equate to loud spectators. Before people start jumping down my throat understand that I totally understand that it's pretty tough to get really rowdy about Alabama A&M and other ho-hum opponents. I'm just saying for various reasons, our crowd is a bit fickle when it comes to all out craziness and noise.

When it's great, it's GREAT. On an normal night, it's just a little above average. I still love our home court and love how the community supports our team.

I thought the Nebraska game crowd of 7000+ was louder and more fun than last night. Last night was good, just not as good. Of course, just my opinion.

There are a ton of arenas that are great places. I don't know how you draw some "we're better" comparison. The arenas at Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa State (back in the Hilton Magic days), Oklahoma State, Arizona, and Utah State, just to name a few, are all good and loud and create a nice home advantage. I'm not sure how you say one is necessarily better than the other.

Of course, Kansas does have a ton of students at the game, and they're on both sides of the floor. That does change the setup a bit. Of course, at Duke they fill the entire lower bowl.

Apples and oranges. I've been to both, the Phog has tradition, the atmosphere is great and the student section destroys ours. I'd take the Pepsi Challenge that the Koch is comparable to many higher profile BCS arenas too.

However, I will say that the times when KU plays a team like Winstom-Salem State or Longwood, the Phog does become subdued which is understandable. Although the arena is important, the fans that put their butts in the seats really dictate the 'feel' of the arena. Both are great so lets leave it at that.

That makes me think of an intramural team a friend of mine was on back when I was a wee lad. Most of the team had to take a smoke break at halftime, so they were aptly named "The Philip-Morris All-Stars".

I have been to a lot of arenas – the Roundhouse is not just "up there" it is in the top 1%, if not the best – objectively.

I've been to 3 games at AFH. As mentioned before, the student section is solid. If people value organized chants and 18-22 year old kids jumping around, then they will favor Allen field house (or one side of it behind the goal anyway).

But when it comes to pure noise from a passionate fan base, Allen doesn't hold a candle. There are too many Johnson county beautiful people wearing custom-knit Jayhawk sweaters, discussing their latest cosmetic surgery with their fellow trust fund babies to bother with silly, disgraceful antics such as yelling at a basketball game.
