But when it comes to pure noise from a passionate fan base, Allen doesn't hold a candle. There are too many Johnson county beautiful people wearing custom-knit Jayhawk sweaters, discussing their latest cosmetic surgery with their fellow trust fund babies to bother with silly, disgraceful antics such as yelling at a basketball game.
 Good grief. Some of you make it seem that CU students are all trust fund babies, and now JoCo is the same. JoCo is a pretty large county with a pretty broad demographic. My room-mate at KU the first year was from JoCo and could barely afford to buy a cup of coffee. The guy worked on campus 16 hours/week to help pay for college.

AFH is special and tough to beat. I've never attended a game at USU, but it also seems like a pretty special place to watch a game. CKA is right up there with the best when the game is important. I wish CKA had better:
      -- band
      -- more chant traditions
      -- more cheerleader involvement
But gracious, CKA does reach uncomfortable levels of noise, and the fan support through good and bad is pretty special.

The band was solid last night. Loved how they forced the canned stuff to get turned off several times.

I sit on row 30. Last night I went down just before half time to take my son to the bathroom. When I hit the steps for the concourse I couldn't believe how loud it was. It was almost annoying but I couldn't believe the difference moving just that many rows made. I can only imagine what it must sound like on the floor.

There were times I couldn't hear, or could barely hear the band and decifer what the hell was going on over there. We were only about 3 sections over from where I usually sit, which is next to the band. Those were during TOs when the crowd was up and into it, but wish the band could have broken thru better than they did.

Those decisions were made by the people running the show. The band takes its directions from them. The athletic department deserves a LOT of credit for putting the game together.
"If you're going to do it, you're going to do it right," athletic director Jim Schaus said. "If we're going to put 'Wichita State' across our chest, then every team is going to matter."

I have been to a couple of games at Ku during my life and at least for those two games the Chuck was better.

Ku does have a lot of students who do a lot of cheering and a lot of crowd gets into that Rock Chalk thing, but for just plain yelling and screaming crowd noise, the Chuck is better.

And for fan comfort there is no comparison. Those hard wooden benches with no back support, with people squeezed in like sardines at Lawrence are no fun. And the bathrooms seemed like something out of the fifties.

I haven't seen a KU game in person or TV for over 10 years, so maybe it has gotten better and louder there. But I doubt it.

The acoustics for crowd noise are much better in the Chuck than the Phog. In the rectangle, noise gets lost up in the corners. In the roundhouse, it all bounces back down. That's one reason why they can't get a sound system that works where everybody can hear Don Hall. I wish WSU had more student attendance, but that isn't going to happen.

Last night, I raised my right arm while I was yelling and my right eardrum almost imploded. I could feel the pressure and then experienced a slight soreness in the aftermath. Definitely loud. And it gets louder the closer you are to the floor.

Koch does not have loud noise. It isn't loud. Its sweet enjoyable music that never gets old.

I have been to 2 or 3 Ku games every year since 1987. I get free tickets and usually a free dinner so I go (except this year, I didn't make it to any Ku games this year)

And I can tell you that no place compares to the roundhouse when it is rocking.

The Phog has two great student sections. They have some great chants. They have a great atmosphere for college basketball.

But it doesn't get as loud or crazy as the roundhouse when it is rocking. I have been to some pretty big games over the years there and it just doesn't reach the level of intensity that the roundhouse can.

The guys that designed the roundhouse in 1955 were brillant. I think they came up with a great venue for college basketball and the sound is great.

On top of that there isn't a bad seat in the house. And when you fill it with 10,500 crazy Shocker fans, it just doesn't get any better anywhere at anytime.

And if you don't believe me after attending over 50 games at each venue, listen to Fran Fraschilla, an unbiased third person.

Or better yet, listen to former Ku coach Larry Brown. I don't remember the exact quote, but I remember him saying after WSU beat KU in 1987 that the roundhouse got so loud that his own players couldn't hear him during the timeouts.

Absolutely. But try saying that to the KU homers around here. They will pull out the "free pass to be an a**hole" card.
