I don't want Marshall fired but I don't think we have to worry about that.
MARSHALL WILL LEAVE probably very soon because the Valley has become a one bid conference.
I bet he is trying his best right now to get into a multi-bid conference. That is what he thought he was getting by going to WSU.
Now that the Valley has clearly cemented itself as a one bid conference there is no reason for Marshall to hang around here any longer.
Then adopt the "Survivor" montra; out recruit, out prepare & out coach the other nine schools and cement that one bid like he did at Winthrop.
Why? Too little margin of error when you can finish 6th in the SEC and skate into the dance every year. A higher paying version of the Big South is not what he bargained for, I can guarantee you.

What Shoxlax said.
Marshall has already done that, he is not interested in doing that again that is one of the main reasons he came to WSU (a long way from his home and recruiting base).
Now that the Valley has turned into the Big South there is no reason for him to stay here.

Me thinks the declaration of the death of a multi-bid MVC is premature. Certainly there are things that need to change and unfortunately that may take a couple years. Let's see how the cylce pans out.
Also, I don't think Gregg Marshall would take a job where he didn't think he could compete for championships. That's not his style. He wants to win and win big.

He wants more than one path to the NCAA TOURNAMENT and he is NOT getting that here.
He is NOT going to wait around a couple of more years to see if the Valley can return to being the multi-bid conference it has always been (since mutli-bids became available).
The Valley now for the first time in its long illustrious basketball history has cemented itself as part of the bottom dwellers of the ncaa:
A one bid conference in a 68 team tourney.
Marshall wants no part of that. Four straight years of one bids is the final straw.

Oh, poor Gregg. I feel for him in your scenerio. Dog gone it, he can't be just decent and underperforming at WSU to get to the dance. He has to actually compete against other fine teams and coaches and meet reasonable expectations. Not like at Winthrop where he had to go up against the big dogs Coastal Carolina's, Liberty's & North Carolina...oh, that's North Carolina-Asheville.
Now back to your scenerio. Which hand-picked 6th place team will guarentee 3G a spot in the dance??? LSU, once a yearly dance team...no. How about Arkansas...I guess there is talk of a union there...no, not a guarentee 6th place finish. Gee, let's call on the spirit of Nostradamus. Maybe he can lead the way for 3G to walk on the SEC campus that will magically deliver his mediocre results and land him back in the dance...REALLY!

Maybe he is not ready for the prime time of the MVC. You have to out-coach the other guy even though you appear to have superior talent.

While I think he would take ANY BCS job that is available to him I would NOT limited it to the BCS. I think at this point he could leave for an A-10 or C-USA job. Although I think he might be a little pickier at which A-10 or C-USA job he would take.
We've been on ESPN channels enough for true basketball junkies to have seen us and Gregg several times. Many in the Southeast surely know him from his reputation from Withrop. Just saying that after 250 wins, he's not some mystery coach that had a lightning in a bottle season.
After four seasons, two of which were entirely rebuilding, some here are ready to unload him. Are we of such basketball stature that we can afford that luxury because of one season of unfulfilled promise? We are not.
Other than DOFO how many have really called for him to be fired right now? Perhaps there has been some, I am not going to take the time to count them up. I have a feeling it isn't many. So I don't know why so many people assume that if you have anything at all critical to say about coach then it must mean you want him fired right this minute.
I'll be honest though, if we don't progress over the next couple of years then I won't be upset if we look for other options.
Fair enough. If we don't see tangible improvement over the next couple years he should be re-evaluated. Quite honestly, I doubt that there is anyone on this board that truly wants him fired. But man, the bitching is relentless.
For the SN veterans, how long did the negativity last after the Vanderbilt debacle, or the 2007 meltdown, or the disasters with Stanford and Nevada?
I do remember many similar meltdowns the two years before Turgeon finally go us to the S16. Especially the year we were passed over by Northern Iowa who finished below us in the regular season standings for an at-large berth, and many discussions about Turgeon's ability, and the utter sense of dread when he left before GM accepted the position. 7 years, 2 or 3 NITs, and one NCAA. And I remember a late season slide from 18-2 to the NIT.
I also remember the questioning of the players that fell just short (Howard, Burns, Kampman) and the short memories of what it was like before they got here...
And I am sure that if Turg were ranked with his peers at the time, he would have rated no higher than Marshall is this week.
We need to get over it and be glad he is here, because I for one have no idea who I would want to replace him. He was my first choice to replace Turgeon even before Turgeon left. No similar names come to mind right now that have the same pedigree Marshall had when he came here...

I agree he is a good fit here, but for crying out load be accountable for taking a team picked by everybody to win the MVC, which would make sense and win hands down in STL, and failed to do both. Accomplish something first then lets boot him out the door to a BCS job.

Well I will get an "All-Hands-On-Deck" alert out to Wake Forest, Depaul, South Florida, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Iowa, just to name a few, that 3G will take your best offer to come to greener pasture.
I still want to know why the hell Marshall didn't come out and talk with Mike Kennedy on the post game? I wanted to hear what he had to say after that lame ass coaching performance.
Please listen to the last few minutes of tonight's coaches show podcast.
When Coach Marshall signed on the dotted here to Coach, I figured he would stay about 7 years, just like Coach Turgeon. I like Coach Marshall and have spoken with him twice. He is a cool, down to earth, and a dedicated, hard working Coach. Even so, when everybody and their Aunt picks you to win the The Valley race and the Lew, and you don't, then this brings in a cloud of doubt. Each Season he has Coached, we have made improvements. However, it is normal for we fans to want it all and want it now. In life, when things get crazy, somebody will usually be blamed. In the scheme of things, I really like Coach Marshall. Hard work usually pays nice dividends, and I doubt that few Coaches outwork him. I bet he never dreamed how tough it would be to dominate Valley play.
From here we can all look back like Lot's wife who turned into a pillar of salt. The other option is to look ahead towards the future and see where it takes us. Coach Marshall is probably already focused on signing some more players in here for next Season. In his cut-throat business of coaching, you better produce as Coach Les just found out the hard way. Next Season, we still have several returning solid players. However, we lose around 4 key Seniors as well, including 3 of our 4 bigs. Thus, the Season after next will be a real bearcat as we lose all of our Juniors of this Season which will be a big hit.
We are all frustrated because we longed to Dance and have been pointing to this very Season to do just that for quite some time. It is what it is. This Season, we wanted to take that final quantum leap as the experts predicted we would. Along the way, we even won 8-9 Valley Road games which was a first. However, the 3 Valley losses at home was totally a mystery and came back to haunt us. I still can only wonder how this Season would have been if we would have won the Connectict game. Michigan State and Kentucky were ripe for an upset as well. What if? Now we have to pick ourselves up and jump back in the ring, play some NIT games, and see what is shaking from there. As for we Shocker fans, we just keep coming back for more and will continue to do so.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Don't get me wrong. I do NOT want Marshall to leave. I am very disappointed in the way the season ended, but I am very scared of the very real probability that we will have a new coach next year. I don't even have the slightest idea of who it would be.
It is not something I want, I just think it is probably going to happen because Marshall is very ready to get out of this one bid conference.
