Let's sum up the notion of firing Marshall:

He made us good enough for fans to have high expectations, so we should fire him for the expectations not being met.

Would we all prefer a coach whose teams' talent and past success did so little to inspire confidence that there were no expectations for us to fail to meet?

      Perspective

Great post by Harley. Sensible, level-headed, thoughtful -- how the heck did that get in here, anyway? You da man, Ed. Personally, I hope Marshall leaves WSU via retirement. That may be unlikely, but it's certainly more likely than him being fired anytime soon.

Doesn't Plane Shocker, this thread's originator = DOFO? If so, that tells us all we need to know right there. Time to rejoin reality.

The idea of firing Marshall is ridiculous. He is a good coach, but he still has work to do. Teams beat us this year by basically taking Durley out of the game, and Marshall did nothing to counteract it that worked.

Our guards lack imagination and basketball IQ, and it shows in our offense that so often gets stalled. I must say Ragland was getting better at running the team.

This team has been perplexing and frustrating - going out and winning on the road, but losing at home.

I understand not wanting to fire Marshall now, or even not wanting to talk about firing Marshall now. But I don't see why some of you are still absolutely in love with him. What has he done to show he should be here as long as he wants? Back-to-back NIT berths? What is our standard? My standard is I want an NCAA bid every couple of years, and 5 years should be enough to get one. If your standard is to have a winning record, then good for you I guess.

Marshall's seat definitely needs to be turned up a degree or two. How many good freshman has Marshall recruited in his 4 years here? He's not building a good program, he's building an average team and plugging the holes with above average JUCOs. Toure' was a good freshman and look how he's doing now. If the freshman show some potential next year, then I'm fine with that buying him another 5 years. If the team isn't good next year, anything less than a top 5 finish...and I think it's time to start considering other directions.

That's another problem, don't be signing kids just by seeing them play a good game.
            1) When we sign a player, the recruiting process has been over months if not years. No one is signed because the played a good game.

2)Ramon Clemente, Clevin Hannah, Joe Ragland and Ben Smith have been fine players in this program. Our record with HS kids is not as good.

It's much to early to criticize Marshall's recruting. He really has had only two recruiting classes brought in so far. You really can't count the first one, since all he had time to do is grab what was available. His third recruiting class has yet to arrive. Turgeon's last recruiting class blew up.

Turgeon went to three consecutive NIT's before he made it to the NCAA tourney.Somebody mentioned how much better off the program was when Marshall took over than when Turgeon came in. I question the validity of that idea.

I think back to when K-State dumped a semi-successful Dana Altman. How long did it take them to recover from that?

I can remember back to not so long ago when the mood on this message board was just please let us be competitive. Now its fire the coach?

I believe Marshall said at one pont he preferred an 8 man rotation. I woud not be surprised to see him revert to that next year. I cringed when he brought back the same starting lineup for the second half. With the exception of Durley those guys generated no offense at all. As for Kyles jacking up bad shots, I'll take that VS any of the threes put up by the rest of the team.

My post might have been posted in a different thread; I have no opinion about firing Marshall. (OK, I do; it's a stupid topic now but not a year from now if WSU doesn't get to the dance in 2011-12.)

My points are (1) the missed opportunity Schaus cost WSU and (2) Marshall's poor tactical coaching. I think Marshall should sit down with Bobby Knight and go over film of every WSU game Marshall has coached. Knight should critique every game and then give Marshall a set of guidelines on coaching. WSU should pay for this educational experience.

Ok, COACHES, what do you do to open up the inside for Durley against a team that has sagged almost to the free throw line?

I'll help. MAKE 3'S!!!! If you watched we did some very creative things to get our shooters open, the shiots just didn't fall. And everyone complains about us chucking up so many 3's (and I HATE how many bad 3's this team takes, they should be taking them in the rhythm of the offense) and teams sag even further back.

If you pound it inside to baited passing lanes, the passes get stolen, the player quickly gets a visit to the bench and we all yell how dumb that was.

You stretch a defense by making jumpshots and 3's, making them come out and guard you, opening up the inside. If the shots aren't falling, see last 8 games, then we (and EVERY OTHER TEAN) will have trouble.

Some people are just nuts. Marshall isnt bad, he isnt perfect. How many people who post on here are actually qualified to be a D-1 Coach?

Yes the season was a disappointment. I always hate it when my team is ranked high in the pre-season. It always leads to disappointment.

I am happy the Shockers are playing postseason basketball in the 2nd level tourny. It could be worse.

The same players should get the same amount of minutes each game unless performance has considerably dropped over a period of 3-4 games.

That way the players will know their roles better. You can't cycle through "go-to" players. However on this years team it seemed noone manned up enough to be the "go-to" guy.

Coach Marshall won't be going anywhere, unless he leaves to go to a different program, which most likely will happen sometime down the road.

Why are we wanting to fire a coach who took us to the finals of the MVC tournament, something that hasn't been done in a long time.

We WILL be playing postseason basketball, most likely in the NIT. Would some of you rather have the days of Randy Smithson again, where we barely could get 10 wins a season, and couldn't stay out of the play-in round? I will take a home, or hell, even a road game in the NIT, CBI, or CIT, as opposed to staying home and watching March Madness anyday.
