bs, they can sure play in our town, but dont have the balls to play us.
KSU ran away from a scrimmage this fall. Who retreated faster, the team as a whole, or the individual players?
Huggins might not even survive another off season, especially if he goes back to Vegas.
I might be wrong here, but I believe if you scrimmage another D-1 school before the season starts, it takes away one of your exhibition games. Perhaps Frank felt his team would be better off destroying Washburn instead of being somewhat tested against us in a scrimmage. Or, perhaps the higher powers told him to cancel it so they could get extra ticket money. Or (probably the most likely thing) is that I'm completely wrong here and KSU just backed out because Kelly and Pullen were too busy getting free stuff at JC Penny's.
Did anyone else hear the rumor that KSU canceled their scrimmage because last year people from the WSU side had loose lips?
I hope this is not the case.
Flame away, but I am a basketball fan first, Wichita State fan second.
Not often you will see a big east team in wichita.....and thats the truth.
I guess East Coast Bias makes since then!
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.
For what it's worth, I feel that if this game comes to fruition, that WSU should never, ever play at the IBA again.
I take the concept of a Division-One regular season contest being played in Wichita that does not include the Shox a direct "slap-in-the-face" move of disrespect to the school and athletics program. Furthermore, this "slap-in-the-face" involves one of the two in-state institutions that currently refuses to play WSU.
Not that my analogy is an exact replica, but could you imagine Texas playing Arkansas in College Station and the A&M fans take it lying down?
Allowing this to happen (or at least allowing it to happen without making a collective extreme displeasure of the athletic department/fans known) makes us look a lot more UMKC-ish than the Gonzaga-ish or Major Program we hope our school to be.
Did WSU pay for IBA?
Was IBA built for WSU Athletics?
Is it in IBAs charter to advance WSU Athletics?
Does IBA and WSU have any kind of formal agreement allowing WSU any say on what game is allowed to be played in IBA?
Does College Station, TX have a public build arena not related to the school?
If I was a citizen of Wichita and there is an opportunity to have a basketball game in the new Downtown arena, one which would possible have national interest beyond the cities of Wichita and Tusla, one that has the possibility of being on National TV and show case our new arena, and they turned it down I would be upset.
Nationally, the Big XII minus II is a bigger name then the MVC. Nationally, there is more interest in the Big almost XII then there is in the MVC. Nationally, the Big used to be XII is a bigger draw than the MVC. The same can be said of the Big East over Conference USA.
Like it or not, its a good game for the IBA to get.

Other than this one comment (which I don't think others particularly agree with):

The anger is vented at KSU for stabbing WSU in the back by not playing them. It's not being vented toward IBA.
The game is good for Wichita, good for IBA, and disappointing for WSU fans that want to play KU and K-State.

I think the expression for this is "cutting off your nose to spite your face."
Intrust was not built to cater to, or soley support Shocker athletics. In fact, I thought that was pretty clear in the whole arena debate/planning. The University wanted to maintain its own identity and venue, and chose to renovate Levitt Arena. I think this was a wise decision on behalf of the U.
The arena belongs to the citizens of SG county. Don't you think there are some KSU alums or fans in SG that are thrilled this game is coming to town? Don't you think there are some basketball fans in general who are thrilled to have this game come to town?
The arena is supposed to make money, both for the venue and for the city. Despite the negative attention on this board, this "event" will be very well attended, and draw folks from out-of-town, who will likely dine and drink before/after the game.

I read more about the scrimmage on KSU's message board than over here. Not only that, but the majority of the rumors talking about how KSU was manhandled came from KSU "sources". So it wasn’t like WSU players and/or fans were passing around stories.
From what I heard, Intrust Bank Arena doesn't know anything about it yet.
Maybe someone could host an all-day event at the arena that day.
Honestly, I'm sure nothing is in writing yet. The 2 coaches got together a couple nights ago and agreed that playing at IBA would be a good idea. From the sound of it nothing has actually been planned yet.... This would be similar to our Tulsa deal. Last Spring a couple buddies of mine had drinks with an assistant coach at Tulsa. Many drinks in he spilled the beans that Marshall and Tulsa's coach had agreed to schedule a series, however it took months before it was in writing and got out to the public.
I will probably be there, but I will wear yellow. I wear purple in Manhattan, I wear blue in Lawrence. I'm going to wear yellow in Wichita, doesn't matter who is playing.

I hear a lot of rumors both true and fictional, but that's one I haven't heard at all.
I would find it mildly interesting that would be a reason for canceling the scrimmage. Why? Are they afraid of some kind of violation? That seems, um, unlikely. Are they afraid that their 1 play will be passed around in a scouting report? Again, can't think that's a big concern.
