A little confusing in the sense of is it JUST a Title IX issue with Cal ? Two of the sports cut were women's programs.

I love this from the article:

When Lopez took the Wildcats to Wichita State in 2007, a sellout crowd of 7,851 attended at Eck Stadium. He was knocked out by the facilities: restrooms and showers connected to the dugouts, loge boxes and suites for corporate and high-end guests, a terrace to protect fans from the sun, and a berm in the outfield for picnics, social interaction and prime viewing.

Cali is hurting financially and I am not just talking about the university, the entire state. This is the first of many hits. Meredith Whitney predicts 80,000 permanent Wall Street layoffs as well as reduced bonuses (although not as bad as 2008). The layoffs are to begin in the first quarter of 2011. My point is if the cash cow is taking significant hits the impact on state & local governments for a neurotic electorate that is empowered with a dysfunctional state constitution is even more significant.

This make you ask the question why WSU can't dominate the MVC.

WSU has kept up with the elite as far a facilities and perks for players and program support, but have only won the conference 4 of the last 10 years.

Actually I think WSU has won 5 out of the last 10 regular season titles (2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008) and Missouri State is the only other team to win more than once. Don't they count the school year of the season rather than the calendar year? Isn't the upcoming season 2010-2011 even though the entire season is played in 2011?

During those same 10 years WSU either won the conference or the tournament 8 out of the 10 years with 2001 and 2006 being the only time WSU didn't win one or the other.

WSU has won the conference tournament 7 out of the past 10 years with no other team winning it more than once.

It has obviously dropped off from the dominance of the 80s and 90s but I would still consider those results are dominating the conference especially when you throw in that 4 out of the 5 years WSU didn't win the conference they finished one game or less out of first.

If it was 5 out of 10 (which is not) would that make it any better?

              2001 - 2nd
              2002 - 1st
              2003 - 2nd
              2004 - 1st
              2005 - 2nd
              2006 - 3rd
              2007 - 1st
              2008 - 1st
              2009 - 3rd
              2010 - 2nd

Here is the deal - if WSU want's to really have a chance to get to the CWS they have to dominate the MVC from start to finish. If they don't, the won't.

Maybe if you were in the B12. The MVC doesn't care about baseball. When WSU was dominating the MVC in the 90's and even early 2000's there were actually some good program in the MVC and the Baseball RPI.

Shocks won 2010 in a tie breaker with ISU Red with winning 2 out of 3 at there place. Regular season just saying.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

Yeah, your right. They finished tied for 1st in the 15th ranked conference and saw no post season play. But at least they will get to hang another banner showing they have won 5 out of 10.

Still my question "Why can't WSU dominate the MVC?" What is holding WSU back?

                    :good:

People need to understand that asking a regarded "national power" in baseball to win the regular season and league post season in a withering 15th ranked conference, year in and year out, is NOT asking a lot if that program wants to be considered anything above a second division team among the high ranking conferences.

The MVC doesn't care about baseball.
WIth the obvious exceptions, neither does a lot of the Big 12.

I think it is probably dangerous ground to try and compare the mvc to the b12. B12 is a power conference, the mvc non-conference fodder for the power conferences.

The lowliness of the MVC and grandeur of the Big 12 are greatly exaggerated on this board.

You may be right, but in the eyes of those who make post season team decisions your not. I stand by my statement above.

Last year WSU tied for 1st in conference play, didn't win the league post season tourney, and stayed at home.

1-5 (1st division) in the Big XII played on, 6-10 (2nd division) stayed home. WSU was treated as a second division team of a big conference dispite tying for 1st in the "mighty" MVC.

We win a couple of more non conf games, not even vs. big names, and maybe one more MVC game last year and we're in. We've gotten plenty of at-larges through the years.

Agree on the comment above about grandeur and attention to baseball being exaggerated in the Big 12. Outside of Austin and a couple of others, attendance is pretty lethargic and the sport is about 4th or 5th, or so most popular on most campuses. WSU has a lot to be proud of on the diamond that most of those places envy.

It pains me, it really does, but the facts don't support that hypothesis

Big 12 Ranked No. 4 in the Nation in 2010
MVC ranked 15 in the Nation in 2010

MVC sends 1 team to the Regional
B12 sends 1 team to the CWS (5 teams to the regional)

MVC sends 0 team to Supers
B12 sends 2 teams to Supers

WSU draws 63% more fans against b12 opponents at home than versus MVC opponents.
