  • Johnny Coy- draft

Johnny Coy is represented by Octagon Sports Agency. His actual advisor is in Chicago. Johnny made it very clear that his intentions were to return to WSU next year and for that reason I don't believe he will be drafted this year. I just wanted to let all the Shocker fans know Johnny's intentions.

It's really none of my business, but can he be represented by any agency?

        Johnny Coy

He hasn't hired anyone. They are basically giving advice. It's pretty standard stuff. It's kind of like Scott Boras negotiating until the deadline and then if his guy doesn't end up signing he can still go back to college. I hope that makes sense.

I, too, am very glad JC's intentions were to come back. However, newshock1234, let's not put words in his mouth that he didn't say and have certain expectations that could be dampened.

Things change. He gets drafted in the late rounds, but has a great, great summer. Offers could be made that weren't expected. Personal situations change. I think JC is as committed to coming back as anyone should reasonably expect. I just feel "fully committed" = "absolutely, no way, I'd sign, don't draft me" and that's not fair JC or any one in his position.

              Draft

In Johnny's case it's all about signability. You can believe what you want, but that is the only issue in his case. I can't speak for Springer.

I'll totally understand if you don't want to answer. I am just trying to get a handle on how things work and your first hand knowledge needless to say is far beyond my internet searches.

Are you saying a guy like Scott Boras, if he chooses, can represent a college athlete and negotiate on their behalf, without being under contract for payment? Essentially, Boras takes the work on, hoping there is a payday down the line and if not he's just out his time (and any expenses)?

If this is the case, then is it also true that the NCAA has no problem with this arrangement?

I do not think they can negotiate for their client but they can give advice on where they think they would be drafted, where what the payday might be and compare that to what they think is available for next year so that the player can make the best choice for themselves

I believe it. I was imipressed with what I saw from Mr. Coy and if he's coming back next year it will be a good thing for WSU. IMO (and it not worth much) he one of the better pure hitters we have seen come into the program for awhile.

College athletes can have advisors. Once they are drafted and sign, those same advisors then become agents.

I agree. I don't think it is all that bold. He will be drafted very early next year.

Don't get me wrong... very VERY happy that Johnny will probably be back. My thoughts are... we are in the 31st round now. Would there have been signability questions if he had gone in the top say 20 rounds?

Also... college athletes can have advisors. Once they are drafted and sign, those same advisors then become agents.
You are aware he didn't sign after being drafted in the 7th round out of high school arn't you?
