Don't get me wrong... very VERY happy that Johnny will probably be back. My thoughts are... we are in the 31st round now. Would there have been signability questions if he had gone in the top say 20 rounds?
Also... college athletes can have advisors. Once they are drafted and sign, those same advisors then become agents.
You are aware he didn't sign after being drafted in the 7th round out of high school arn't you?
AGAIN, I'm thrilled that Johnny will be back. Great kid with amazing potential.

Of course... however, it's one thing coming on here on Monday and saying Johnny won't sign. It's an entirely different thing coming on here Wednesday and saying he won't sign.
Let me ask you this.......if he was drafted in the 7th round and in his only college season he earns freshman all american award, demostrates some of that power potential and last time I checked still has a 6'7 frame why would he not get drafted in the first 30 rounds two years later?
I don't understand why you just don't take his brother at his word. Why would he come on here and try to do public relations with shocker fans on an internet forum?
I believe him, but even if it was some spin doctering I wouldn't give A CRAP! All that I care about is JC is coming back, lol.
Every team that talked to JC or his advisor asked one thing. How much will it take to sign you? He decided a long time ago that he would have to be bought out of his sophomore year at WSU. His dollar amount was based on wanting to return to WSU.
I was really impressed this season once Johnny finally got the chance to play almost everyday at his batting eye, his ability to make contact, and his power when he did make contact. The kid doesn't get fooled much and he never gets cheated at the plate.
The big issue for Johnny, to some degree, is that he is a player without a position. 1B or LF that can hit are not rare. Johnny needs to demonstrate that he can REALLY hit or possibly give 3B a try. If his quickness improves, 3B might be an option, although with his size his agility will always be questioned.
Johnny is head and shoulders the Shox best non-pitcher prospect since Conor Gilaspie.

Basketball Season Tix since '77-78 . . . . . . Baseball Season Tix since '88
First base will always be a position for Johnny providing he can hit. If Billy Butler (a 1st round pick who was a 3rd baseman) can be made into a decent major league first baseman, Johnny Coy can. It all depends on his hitting.

So how much was next year worth to him? $1 million? $800,000?
This draft could not have realistically gone any better for the Shocks.
I agree, I don't mind losing Juniors in the draft...sure it hurts the team, but they've normally had 3 good years here and you can often times get your best money as a Junior. Everyone should stick around until at least their Junior year!
I would think that a player that can hit, and potentially play either of 3-4 positions would be more valuable than a player that was only locked into 1 position.
More flexibility, and options for a major league team.
Not arguing with you Snapshot but that hasn't stopped many teams from drafting great hitters in the first round that are limited. The royals looked at outfield and first base for Butler, they are currently looking at moving Hosmer to the outfield too from first base. Both were first rounders.
Baseball America, in an article available to subscribers, lists WSU’s Johnny Coy as one of the top prospects in the MINK League, where Coy played this summer with St. Joseph. The story also says Coy has dropped basketball and will play only baseball at WSU. Not true, according to Coy. “Not true at all,” he said Friday afternoon. Coy was aware of the ranking, but had not read the article. “That’s weird,” he said. Marshall also said Coy remains a member of the team.

However, Wichita State’s Johnny Coy is a baseball guy after a meeting Wednesday with basketball coach Gregg Marshall. Coy quit the basketball team.
Until the signing deadline passes, I’m not holding my breath that Johnny will be back in the fall.
“Confrontation simply means meeting the truth head-on.”
