Or maybe he figured out during the course of the season that GS had picked his favorite at 3rd base and if a .240 average wasn't going to displace Harbutz and only a sports hernia could then why bother returning.

Nothing against Harbutz just think Goro didn't get his fair shake. Seems to me Gene gives certain players a mile worth of rope to hang themselves and others about 2 feet of rope.

Still can't figure out why they chased Joe Roscrans off.
I agree that I hate to see Goro leave but I don't quite understand how anyone can think Goro was any better than Harbutz. In fact Goro probably wondered if he would play as much next year with a healthy Harbutz.

They had roughly the same # of ABs but other than batting average Harbutz was better in every other area. Harbutz had twice as many HRs and extra base hits and had an on base % 52 points higher than Goro. Harbutz also had a higher fielding percentage.

Why do you assume everything on here is untrue unless The Wichita Eagle confirms it?[/quot

BTW Fever, I had some moron HCGS suckup who puts up K's and bomb pictures on a rail at the MVC championship debacle refer to me as 'ShockerFever', didn't know if I should've been feeling insulted or not!
Wow. That's fantastic. I've now gotten to somebody so badly that they have to drop internet message board names as smack talk out at the park. LOL!

I'm guessing it was GoShockers89 or maybe PuppyWatcher.

Speaking of PuppyWatcher... looks like he never came back to eat some crow. What a pusspack!! Wrong again, PuppyWatcher!!!!

As for Goro, very unfortunate to lose him. I thought he looked pretty solid to end the year..
Don't worry, I would never confuse you with someone who was actually in attendance. ;-)

Too bad about Nate. I feel like he had the highest upside of the freshman infielders this season.

I didn't necessarly say he was better. When Harbutz was struggling big time Goro got little chance to earn the spot, thats all I'm saying.

that chance is usually won or lost through practice. dont know either player's practice habits but that is the first place to look as to why goro didnt get more of an opportunity when harbutz struggled.

Maybe so but when you are playing 4-5 games a week the results are right there in front of you. Instead of gaging potential performance via practice.

To be frank a Goro (0.275/0.321/0.363) or Harbutz (0.252/0.373/0.389) is not all that impressive even for freshman. Somebody needs to step up their game.

But I suspect Goro could read these same numbers and see that he had a uphill climb to supplant Harbutz.

But I was in attendance, so that would be a FAIL.

Goro was going to be a stud... really disapointed he is gone. maybe the mentality isnt there.

Does anyone remeber players leaving during the CWS years?

Off the top of my head I can think of a couple of guys that left after the 1989 team won the national championship- Jay Haffely (freshmen on the 89 team) and Bryant Winslow (Sophomore on the 89 team).

There are almost always a couple of guys that leave every year. It happens in basketball too.

no, but i remember at least one entering the draft prematurely. dont think he played much that season cause i know he didnt start.

If he goes to SLU, Mizzou or any other division 1 school we will have to sit out a year.

I believe he does have to sit out a a season. This was not the case until a rule change went into effect on August 1, 2008. They also require that no player may receive less than a 33% scholarship and roster limits were trimmed.

Oh yes. As someone else mentioned usually one or two players leave every year. That is not unusual.

Some of the ones that I can remember from that time period (88-96 or so) just sitting at my computer tonight racking my brain:

1988- Doug Ruff, Mike Blankenberger (Mike was from Arizona, he might have just quit the team I don't really remember the circumstances

1989- Bryant Winslow- Famous for playing first base in the championship game against texas with an injured leg. If I remember right he transferred to Wyoming or some place like that.

1990- Jamey Tarrh- started at first base as a Freshmen, left after his freshman year to some place in Virginia if I remember right. I think he was just homesick. He was a very good player and he had a lot of potential.
Jay Haffley also left after the 90 season and a pitcher named Matt Criss (although Matt's might have been due to injury, I don't really remember what happened to him).

1991- Brian Morrow (if I remember right he transferred to Kstate, but I am not sure).

1992- Joel Bradberry, he was a great pitcher as a Freshman at WSU, but ended up having some arm problems and transferred if I remember right to a small college in Oklahoma.

1993- John Lewallan- He was highly touted out of high school, he just never was able to hit well in college. He transferred to a small college (Newman, I think).
Darren Wheeler- He platooned at catcher for a couple of years before transferring somewhere else.
Trent Babock- Don't really remember what happend to him.

1994- John Bacon, I can't remember where he went, maybe K-state

1995- Jason Bickelmeyer- He did transfer to K-state

1997- Luke Buerlein- started at 3rd base as a Freshman, transferred after fall ball the following year when Koyie Hill looked so good in fall ball that it was obvious that Luke wouldn't be starting at 3rd any more.

These are the ones that I remember the best, there were others. For example, I remember a pitcher from Topeka that pitched quite a bit for a couple of years in the early ninties and then he transferred I think maybe to K-state. His sister worked for Governor Finney so we would talk Shocker baseball every day until her brother transferred. Funny how I can't think of his name right now. :wsu_posters:

There was a Florida pitcher that picked us over Florida State and left after one year.
