I did some checking, i did'nt quite know. I'm not going to make a statement with out knowing like you did. According to Baseball America there are players of every divison. Several players out of the big 12, including Kstate and Texas, plus Mo. and Kansas. The nationals are right in the NBC at Wichita. I'm sure poeple around here has seen mink games. You can check out the league by just clicking on mink leage baseball.com. It will show the teams and the rosters of every player. Baseball america talks about the players in it. Mcgreevy pitch for the Topeka Giants of the mink league. I know they had a real good KS player or two. Anyone else know anything about the league.

The mink league is a midwest, wooden bat league. Basically setup to simulate the minor league experience from the bats, balls and bus trips. I have never read that is considered by the scouts as the "cape of the midwest".

Johnny Coy stats were as follows:

      Avg: 0.299
      OBP: 0.327
      Slg: 0.394

      4 doubles
      3 HR, 23 RBI

      30 K's in 127 AB's
      7 BB

10 for 13 on the basepaths

      0.961 fielding Pct

These ok numbers (his OBP and SLG are not good in my mind) but nothing to write home to your mom about. His K per every 4 AB's is not encouraging. His 3 HR don't really say much as people in the league did better than that.

There were 4 other players on his team that actually had better overall offensive numbers. I suspect his rating by BA is more about what they believe his potential is than actually how he performed.

I hope he's going to be an all-american for WSU, but I have not seen anything that says you should get excited and your expectations up yet.

You did'nt have the up to date stats. I seen those to on a site some where. They were as of the middle of July, were about 15 games short i think. But i'm not for sure. They did'nt include the end of the season, the Mustangs of St. Joe played tell the 1st of August. The up to date stats had Coy leading them in HRS, HITS, RBI'S, and hitting 310. They ended up winning over 30 games. I was curious, i email St. Joe Mustang.com and got the up to date stats on the team. Their head of operation is a guy named Rick Mutean.

          MINK League

It doesn't really matter how strong or how weak the MINK league was last year. The bottom line is that it was the perfect league for Johnny Coy last summer. Johnny had never hit with wood in a game situation in his entire life and had never seen a single live college pitch. He never had much of a fall season last year at ASU and did very little last spring at WSU since he was redshirting. After Johnny's first 70 at bats last summer he was hitting .221, had 3 extra base hits, and over 20 strikeouts. Obviously something clicked and he went on a tear the last part of the year. It is correct that the team didn't update stats after the regular season was over. Johnny went 8 for 12 in regionals with 2 homers and 2 triples and finshed the season hitting .309 with 5 homers. I'm not sure why the stats were never updated, but I guess it doesn't really matter. The facts are that overall his stats were not great last summer, but take into consideration never facing a college pitcher in a live situation and then never using a wood bat in a game situation his summer was not as bad as a few think on this site. It was really difficult for him to adjust to a wood bat for the first time as it is a lot of other players. The main thing is that Gene knows the struggles Johnny was having at the beginning of last summer and he credits Johnny with digging himself out of a major hole to have a pretty decent summer considering the circumstances. Will Johnny have a great carrer at WSU? I hope so, but who knows. The one thing I know for sure is that he will receive great coaching and reach his full potential after his three or four years of college baseball. We couldn't be happier that Johnny is learning from some of the best coaches in the country. I am pumped about February 23rd at KU. Go Shocks!!!!

Gold Walks Off With 5-4 Win

WICHITA, Kan. - Ryan Jones hit a two-run walk off triple to give the Gold a 5-4 win over the Black in game five of the Shocker Fall World Series. The Black now leads the series 3-2.

What a great time to be around sports at Wichita State. What excitement, what great athletes. Most of all what great support from the city. With everything and everyone thinking positive, positive, positive, who knows what Wichita State can accomplish.

A little bit of an unusual stat in the Gold's 5-4 win. The Black team had 8 hits, but those were spread among only 3 players. Johnny Coy's 4-4 performance plus Will Baez and Preston Springer each had 2 hits.

The Gold team's 10 hits were spread among 7 players including Tyler Grimes' first 2 hits of the Series.

Nothing I can do about if they don't want to post up to date stats. Probably another indicator of the quality of the league. You wouldn't see the Cape not updating their stats.

Shockwaves does say that Coy is having a very good fall ball. He is hitting 0.500 in 6 games and has only 1 strikeout in 24 AB's. Only negative is his defensive skills need to improve.

                            # 15, Tobin Mateychick got drilled with a line drive Saturday and left the game.

Anyone know of his status / condition?
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

Out of lurking for a few comments...

                              1) Has NCAA changed the rules since last year? Will each team be able to have only one player on the field at a time? I'm just curious... because it seems a lot of discussion centers on just the one player.

                              2) As far as the stats, most (if not all) of the summer leagues, post only the regular season stats. Post-season/playoff stats are not reflected.

                              3) From what I heard, Tobin was fortunate and turned quickly and was drilled on his back. Again, from what little I know, I think he's okay now.

                              4) Tim Kelley, for those attending any of the Series, is one hilarious guy!

I spoke to Tobin after Saturday's game. He showed me the spot where the line drive hit him on the top side of his arm between the wrist and elbow. He did indicate it HURT! Tobin was taking a ton of verbal abuse from the opposing dugout prior to the line drive. He must be one tough dude to shake that line drive off and try to make the throw to first base. He was charting pitches during Sunday's game and I did not get to follow up. My guess is he is day to day but with only 1 game remaining they may rest him. Tobin is a very friendly as well as talented young man. I wish him the best! He is a "gamer" in my book!
